Last Woman on Earth (1960)
While not a horror film, I'll say a little on this Roger Corman movie. Three individuals (Harold, his wife Evelyn, and Martin) are diving in Puerto Rico, and when they surface, they discover the population of Earth (or Puerto Rico, at the very least) has died off due to some atmospheric oxygen depletion. The three of them must find some way to co-exist and find some way to survive. It doesn't take long for the woman, unsatisfied in her marriage, to fall for the young lawyer (Martin), and conflict erupts. I don't have much to say about this movie. The plot was paper-thin, and none of the three characters were particularly likable. Even though Harold was a narcissistic and annoying individual to begin with, he seems the one most able to keep it together after the “event,” While Martin and Evelyn are nihilistic toward their outlook on how to move forward, Harold wants to make plans and figure out how to do what they have to do, an honorable trait which didn't really go anywhere. Likewise, while it seems we're supposed to root for Martin, he's utterly unwilling to give input of his own of how the three of them can best survive. So none of the characters are likable, and the action toward the end loses it's steam when one of the characters goes blind and dies. It's a plodding movie with little to offer, and I certainly wouldn't recommend it unless you're a Corman fan. A below average film with a vanilla feel. 5/10.
