Like, so many people out there were trying to track this down. And it just...got delivered on a tweet. What the hell.

Body Count (1986). Re-watch of Ruggero Deodato's foray into the slasher-in-the-woods craze of the '80s. I hadn't seen this in a very long time...and had forgotten how bad it was. The opening sequence takes place 15 years in the past, yet everyone in it is wearing modern (in 1986) clothing and hairstyles. The story is unfocused and disjointed with more than its share of groan-worthy moments, the performances are bland (David Hess dials it way back from his usual and even Mimsy Farmer appears at times to be phoning it in) and the killer -- well, I won't spoil it for those who haven't seen it. Not that I wouldn't be doing you a favor if I did. Deodato, though you'll never hear me call him a great director, is off his game here, too. Nice scenery, though. 3/10

Eden Log (2007)* Prime - It was well shot and acted. Dialog was pretty minimal and the cast were all able to hold the screen with little to no issue. It also has really pretty set pieces.

Intruders (2011) Pluto - Saw this soon after it came out and didn’t “get it.” Going back, yeah, the ending was way overhyped. Not a bad movie and it was trying to do something slightly different. It just felt a bit flat.

Sledgehammer (1983)* Shudder - I’ve inadvertently avoided this one. While I don’t regret watching it, I doubt I'd revisit it any time in the near future. Seen a million other movies that look like this but I get the impact on this one.

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021)* HBO - Like most franchises these are getting progressively worse. Some of the stuff was cool and an interesting use of CGI. Then it would be followed by some weird ass, ill imagined, nonsense. Overall it was a really uneven movie.

Army of the Dead (2021)* Netflix - This is exactly what I thought a (current) Zack Snyder zombie movie would look like. But wtf with the font in the opening credits?

Things (1989)* Shudder - Normally I question if I was on too many or too little drugs when I don’t follow a movie like this. This time I do not doubt that this made no sense. Having JBB and Darcy holding my hand certainly helped.

Purgatory Road (2017)* Disc - Took a minute for things to click into place but once it did we enjoyed it. Though god hand killers are a favorite subgenre.

The Theatre of Terror (2019)* Tubi - this one had its moments and the wrap around was kind of sweet. Several of the stories just weren't that good.

Possessor (2020)* Disc - There are points in this movie where we swore we could hear Brandon Cronenberg saying “It doesn't have to make sense but the shot will look real pretty!” And he is not wrong, those shots did look really pretty. And the movie did, luckily, make sense.

The Demon Murder Case (1983)* - One of the weaker satanic panic scare films.

Found Footage (2011)* Prime - The plot summary made this sound a lot like The Poughkeepsie Tapes…..It was not The Poughkeepsie Tapes. Most of the gore was done with weird shots. Like we’d see the victim coughing up blood and their face as they died but all the killing happens off screen.

Contamination (1980). I've seen this Luigi Cozzi (using his English pseudonym "Lewis Coates') horror/sci-fi/splatter flick a couple times in the past but I must not have been paying much attention, because this time I realized how very, very bad it is. I don't know if this flick ever got the MST3K treatment but it certainly deserves it; the writing is terrible, the direction stiff and mechanical, the FX, though copious, are repetitive and poorly designed. The final monster design is a real knee slapper, too. The only thing that gives this flick any kind of clout is co-star Ian McCulloch, who does what he can with what he's given, but to very little effect. Some of the location shooting is well done, though, with plenty of shots in and around New York City, the majority of them achieved without permits. Also, though this film has largely been dismissed as an Alien rip-off, aside from the presence of slimy green eggs, there is nothing at all similar between the two. In fact it plays more like a low-rent Bond movie where our astronaut hero teams up with a pretty lady scientist and a sidekick cop to track down a resourceful villain intent on spreading the murder eggs around the globe. But that cyclopean egg layer is no Ernst Blofeld. 2/10

I got to see a few newer comedy horror films and a couple of more classics this past week. I got to see Full Moon's new comedy horror called "Weed-gies," which is about similar creatures to the classic ghoulies with similar humor that's meant to be stupid but funny, and it is funny and entertaining in that sort of way. Those into the Ghoulies series should get a kick out of that one as well. Another is "Channel 13," a comedy horror anthology that is also meant to be stupid but funny, also entertaining in that sort of way. Another is a spin-off on Scooby-Doo with a Great Dane, similar mystery solving gang that rides around in a van, called "Saturday Morning Mystery," only this one is actually more scary than funny, but it does keep interest, and they did overall a good job with it.

The classics I finally got to see are "The Slayer" from 1982 and Joe D'Amato's "Grim Reaper," also known as "Savage Island," from 1979. "The Slayer" is about a lady who keeps having bad dreams and blames bad things that happen in real life on them, then takes a vacation with her husband, brother, and sister-in-law to a secluded island, hoping that would help with her situation, only to have more bad dreams and more bad things happening on that island. That one actually has an interesting plot and story that really keeps interest with some well developed interesting characters in it. It also has plenty of twists and turns as well. "Grim Reaper" is another classic Italian giallo horror film taking place on a secluded island that not too many people live on, believed to be cursed with a lot of unexplained murders with missing dead bodies. That one starts off intense right from the start, and really has some great twists and turns in it. Those into the Italian giallo style should definitely like that one as well.

I've been on a major Italian horror kick lately. Sometimes that includes revisiting stinkers that I had forgotten were stinkers. Kinda wishing this one had stayed forgotten.

Not awful but not good either. At the end I felt like OK, so? A little over an hour and a half I could have used to organize my sock drawer instead.

I read the script about a week ago. Very mediocre, with lots of poorly written female characters behaving in poorly written female ways. It's obvious this story was written by a male writer with no clue how to write women (that writer being Simon Barrett, who has exhibited a long history of such cluelessness with his past films) as it features them doing what clueless males often fantasize young women doing. Things like taking showers, Mean Girl-ing one another, and using a mode of speech that makes you think they just stepped out of a Kevin Williamson movie (though Barrett is no Kevin Williamson).

I don't know how much of the cluelessness made it to the final movie, but if it's true to the script, it's no wonder this movie has landed with a thud.

    The Banishing, (2020).

This film had a terrible pacing problem, and was super boring. Snooze-fest, not recommended.
I think the film had really only a single attempt at a scare, and it failed utterly. Poo.

    Newyork Ripper, (1982).

Not Fulci's most beloved film, some fans hate it and rank it with the worst he's ever done. I dunno, I always enjoyed it - and there's a fine eyeball slicing scene in the film as well. Fulci had a thing for eyeballs...
