100 Bloody Acres

Been watching these the last days:

Mischief Night - 1/10. Like a billion another flicks who are a million times better. Just another run-of-the-mill boring modern slasher which would be better off never made.
Buck Wild - 4/10. Watchable horror/comedy/buddie flick, but nothing I would watch again.
The Car (1977) - 4/10. Has its moments here and there, but rather silly and dated.
Ghost Bride - 1/10. Garbage
Deadly Weekend - 1/10. Garbage
Bloodsucking Freaks (1976) - 7/10. Now we`re talking. Crazy 70s trash flick which is fun and entertaining as hell. Most have been shocking as hell back in the day, love it!
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) - 6/10. Good stuff. Expected more of a monster film I guess. Still a good remake, need to watch the 1956 movie.
Children of Sorrow - 1/10. Garbage
Flick - 4/10. Very different. Started out good, but ended up a little tiresome.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) - 6/10. Good stuff. Expected more of a monster film I guess. Still a good remake, need to watch the 1956 movie.

The '56 movie is excellent. I highly recommend it.

As remakes go it's pretty good. It gets a lot of heat but it actually fixes some problems in the original film, which tried to fix some problems in the book. It does a pretty good job with the kids, though they're less naturalistic here, but this version of the film looks beautiful. Unfortunately it trades one useless subplot for another where both films should have realized there's more than enough material to just focus on the kids and leave that other rambling stuff to the book, that goes nowhere, where there are no rules and if you tire an audience they can put the book down and come back later. That doesn't work in a film.

The only place it really falls short compared to the original film, I think, is the pool scene in the end. The original, with only a fraction of the budget here, does such a better job it's astounding. Though it had a sizable budget by comparison to the original they didn't have the money for a good VFX team, or for the "A-Team" at a good company, or perhaps the director is at fault for why the digital stunt doubles ruin each scene they're in. In fact all of their attempts at big FX set pieces fail in the remake, despite having more money they just didn't know how to use it properly or have the taste to go subtle. I do like this ending and how they tweaked the "mythos" though.

If you haven't seen the original Let the Right One In you should. The kids here are good but they don't hit those naturalistic notes you get from the original (director's fault). On a scale of remakes I'd put this one around The Ring or The Grudge.

I liked them both almost equally... but IMO Let Me In is the better of the two, and a bit easier to digest for me personally due to the lack of culture bridge crossing.

That's part of the reason I watch foreign films, to learn about other cultures. If I only stuck with my own, that would make me closed minded and boring.

Yeah, I would say Let Me In is about equal to The Ring. Because they both suck compared to the original.

That's as good a reason as any as to why we watch what we watch, but quoting my post in doing so kind of cuts it close to implying bigotry.

I liked both flicks almost equally well, but I gave the edge (albeit razor thin) to Let Me In... due to - yes, culture - but basically that's only due to cultural association/familiarity - and not cultural bigotry.

It's bad writing and bad storytelling to take the audience somewhere that doesn't pay off. In both cases they end up not influencing much of anything associated with the kids. The filmmaker just wastes time. It's as bad as introducing some item or character implied to be important and then just never showing them again.

Please. It's a stalemate of bad choices here.

Death Spa (1989) - delivers exactly what you would expect.. over the top gore, nudity, cheesy 80s stuff.. it's all there
