As remakes go it's pretty good. It gets a lot of heat but it actually fixes some problems in the original film, which tried to fix some problems in the book. It does a pretty good job with the kids, though they're less naturalistic here, but this version of the film looks beautiful. Unfortunately it trades one useless subplot for another where both films should have realized there's more than enough material to just focus on the kids and leave that other rambling stuff to the book, that goes nowhere, where there are no rules and if you tire an audience they can put the book down and come back later. That doesn't work in a film.
