I just saw Hollow Man (2000) today for the first time ever. I had no clue it was a Verhoeven movie, not his finest work, but entertaining. It had a real abrupt ending to it, anyone notice that?

It is really a beautifully shot film. I think a rating of 7 or 8 is reasonably fair.

It's an interesting entry into his filmography. I think the story is pretty good, though it would have been more interesting to see a character that wasn't already an asshole become corrupted by the power of invisibility. As-is, you more or less expect Bacon's character to just up his douchosity and so the film doesn't elevate itself from a basic, expensive, Hollywood monster movie. The controversy over the rape scenes and gore cast too long a shadow over this film before it was even released and so the version people saw was compromised.

The other thing that bugged me was how flat and bright and fake everything looked. Cinematography was hit-or-miss with Verhoeven and this is in the miss category, like Starship Troopers and Total Recall where he and his DP and production designer completely fail to give any sense of legitimacy or location feel to a film shot almost entirely on sets. It's too bad he couldn't have convinced Jan De Bont, who shot the slick neo-noir Basic Instinct for Verhoeven, to come back and give this thing some flavor.

The flat, bright, fake cinematography likely helped the VFX team out, however. If the set looks plastic it kinda doesn't matter if the effects do too, though they did do a bang-up job and fairly photographically convincing version of the eye socket see-thru gag when he's got his latex face on. The water stuff and muscle + vein stuff never felt physical, even though the match-move animation work and removal of Bacon from the plate was exceptionally well executed. It would be several years before Imageworks upped their game in terms of lighting models and convincing shading.

What controversy? Was the film edited and cut to hell? I loved Total Recall BTW, just a fun movie.

This isn't a bad movie, I would give it a modest 5/10(or 6/10). But after watching Hollow Man its like feel being cheated on, I don't know another way to describe it. That fucking ending too, like it's a scene with two sentences spoken and it abruptly cuts to credits lol

The flat, bright, fake cinematography likely helped the VFX team out, however. It's weird to say Verhoeven was in over his head as his bread & butter should be sci-fi, but he was. Not quite down to the level of Levinson with Sphere (1998) though.

Part of it was public and part of it was private. Because the rape and implied rape (and all the really grizzly gore) are effects shots it was a really tough film for Sony to staff. We were hearing about the staff meetings that they were having because once the script got around a majority of the female staff wanted nothing to do with the film, or thought they didn't. We experienced the same thing at DD during Strange Days. They had to include the entirety of the company in on the conversation because there would be work up on monitors depicting imagery that some people have a real problem with. People would flat out refuse to work on a picture like that, threaten to quit or even just quit (likely they were thinking about it anyway and this just gave them the final excuse). There was no way to just keep it confined to the folks working on the film for the same reason that companies have to have a policy regarding harassment. Opening it up to commentary meant the initial reaction was going to be very bad from a lot of women due to sensitivity.

So it had all this negative buzz going behind the scenes before it began. Sony was also really iffy on doing the rape. I don't think I've ever read an interview with Rhona Mitra where she expressed regret or like it was a horrible experience or anything but she's not known for nudity. Elizabeth Shue had done nudity before but putting it into a rape context changes things big time. I guess because this wasn't some oscar pandering woman empowerment movie the simple fact of a rape scene is read as gratuitous and misogynistic. It goes to character but the feminists like to play it as some kind of conspiracy to degrade women.

Once these scenes started to come together there and they started test screening them there was a huge negative reaction, to both the rape and the violence. So what ultimately ended up in the theatrical version is shorter. Rhona Mitra is hot but I've never felt compelled to see if there was an unrated, full version of the original rape scene and gore. There might not even be a fully complete version of the full rape with finished effects.

I can't help but compare it to Barbara Hershey's scenes in The Entity however. That, I think, is more explicit, since the lens is held longer on her naked body being violated by an invisible force. It's still popular entertainment and not an art film or otherwise "important cinema", but it does have the benefit of being about a woman who deals with and finally defies the abuse of a male oppressor. Mitra is nothing but a sexual object, a victim and while Shue fights back the movie isn't about her. Even though the assault was much more "tame" against Shue there was still a lot of hate written and said about even showing her body violated, that exploring this scenario at all is misogyny. Personally, I think it would be completely disingenuous and complete bullshit to not show some kind of sexual acting out in any film exploring invisibility. I'm not saying that this is a necessary, healthy depiction of male sexuality but so much feminist rhetoric seems to deny any expression of male sexuality, no matter how realistic or natural and place it in the context of its depiction rather than taking the perpetual victim stance.

Well, I think it was just a bad script, mostly. I think it was too face value. His films often explore dark parts of the human psyche or culture but this seemed to lack anything deeper than what you saw on the surface. I don't think Bacon's character needed to be redemptive in any way but he needed to be more interesting. Everyone seemed more or less like stock characters and sorta like an '80s straight-to-video exploitation picture. Maybe if it had a little more camp and wasn't so dreadfully serious without having the development and production value to back that up it would have been more enjoyable.

Total Recall is a lot of fun despite its faults and that, combined with the puzzle of it all, makes it a better experience, I think, when looking at Verhoeven's scifi filmography.

All Hallow's Eve- Pretty damn good. The middle story is a little "meh", but I like where this director is going. He should have pushed the limits just a little bit more. 7/10
