Tragedy Girls - enjoyed it. I am twisted though. I like twisted apparently...they both would've had my heart!

So i have some big problems with this movie and anyone who watched it probably saw the same issues. Its very, very, very clear that this was a movie that was bought by the Cloverfield people and then they decided to add these scenes into the movie that connected it to Cloverfield. Those scenes are as obvious as it can get and they very much take you out of the movie. Cloverfield lane had this same problem except that it ruined the end of the movie. I would LOVE to see a cut of this movie without the Cloverfield bullshit because i think it would be pretty damn good.

Eaten Alive! (1980). I'm not a big fan of Italian cannibal flicks; I don't mind the gore or nudity, it's the animal cruelty that gets me. But back around '90 or so I picked up a book called The Official Splatter Movie Guide, by John McCarthy. It became one of my life missions as a horror fan to see every title in that book (and its follow up, volume 2), even ones that I had no real interest in -- like this flick. Anyway, I happened to be browsing channels on my Roku last night when I checked out Shockwerks TV, and this movie was just starting. Seeing an opportunity to check another title off in the book, I sat through it.
Basically it's about a woman searching for her lost sister, only to discover sis has taken up with a Jim Jones-like leader of a cannibal cult. Quite a bit in common with most other Italian cannibal flicks, particularly Cannibal Holocaust, which, though it came after, also starred this film's leading man, Robert Kerrman. Honestly I think both this flick and Holocaust are exploitative trash (though Holocaust is admittedly very well photographed) but distaste for the films aside, I do think Robert Kerrman proved himself in both films to be a surprisingly good actor, especially for someone who got their start in porn. Shame he wasn't able to find more mainstream work, as I think he would have made a fine character actor.
Anyway. As much I love me my exploitation flicks, genuine animal slaughter for the sake of easy shock is inexcusable, and IMO undermines any good points a movie may have otherwise. As it turns out, this one didn't have many good points to undermine anyway. 2/10

235. 2/3/2018 - "Seclusion" (2015) - 4/10. So, upon waking up, I decided to watch this. Went over to my Hulu and saw the Cabin Fever remake. I was like ahh screw it and pressed play. 20 minutes in I realized it wasn't Cabin Fever, but called Cabin Fear. The alternate title is Seclusion. It's your basic cabin in the woods slasher. It has some good actors, but the story is all too familiar and brings nothing new to the table. Ending doesn't make sense at all.
236. 2/4/2018 - "Afflicted" (2013) - 7/10. Going off of Strt's rec, this was a pleasant surprise. I watched this on, I think, Amazon Prime and it was really good. Found footage of a few guys going to Europe for a 1-year vacation. It's found footage because they are live streaming a lot of it. I don't want to get into it too much, but obviously something shitty happens and you get to see how they deal with some classic horror tropes.
237. 2/5/2018 - "The Cloverfield Paradox" (2018) - 6/10. Man, was this kind of disappointing. I saw the ad while watching the Superbowl and I was really excited. I enjoyed Cloverfield the first couple times, but it doesn't age well. Although, I loved 10 Cloverfield Lane. Thinking they were headed in the right direction, I felt like this would be a great story to be told. The casting was great and I loved the plot. So, what went wrong? Well, the movie was a complete mess. Chris O'dowd, as much as I love that guy, had too many comedic moments in this. The script called for him to make a sarcastic comment every two seconds and that didn't really fit in with the seriousness of the rest of the film. On top of that, there were scenes here and there that didn't really lead anywhere. There were so many things going on that the characters overlapped one another and it became a tad confusing. I appreciate what they were trying to do, but it fell flat. It had a super interesting first 30 minutes and then problem after problem. Overall, it was a mess and the ending felt like the filmmakers said, "Well, how do we connect this to Cloverfield? Oh right!"
238. 2/6/2018 - "The House Next Door" (2017) - 7/10. Super solid Indian possession film. It shares the same cliches as most possession flicks, but they somehow make it worth watching. It was actually spooky at times and provided for a pretty bad ass experience. It was paced well and the characters were cool. It has subtitles. On Netflix.
239. 2/7/2018 - "Beginning of the End" (1957) - 3/10. I admit, I watched the MST3K version of this because it was on haha. But the movie is terrible. I tried watching it for it's own merit despite what Mike and the bots were saying, but that didn't get me anywhere. Another 50's giant bug movie that has a terrible script. It has some decent effects here and there. There aren't many reasons to watch the non-MST3K version of this. It does have that classic horror movie charm though, that's hard to despise it. Watched on Hulu.
240. 2/8/2018 - "Hellraiser: Judgement" (2018) - 4/10. The story was extremely predictable. You knew who the Perceptor was as soon as they were investigating it. Anyone who watches movies could see that twist coming from a mile away. I feel like they based the story around the budget and built it from there. It was just a lousy excuse for a script. The movie heavily borrows from Se7en. Obviously not the Hellraiser characters, but the story itself. Se7en had a pair of cops investigating the seven deadly sins and this one is the commandments. It was so half assed and the budget limited them so much that all the commandments weren't even filmed. If the run time was longer then this movie could have had so many cool and unique deaths. I liked all the characters and think the actors did a fine job, but the Hellraiser characters were for sure tacked on. It didn't feel like a Hellraiser film at all. Pinhead was sitting down half the time just chilling and offered no real plot advancement. The box was opened in record time and only the final 10 minutes felt like a true Hellraiser film. This one actually reminds me of Hellraiser Inferno. In fact, it deals with detectives investigating murders as well. This one just brings nothing new to the table in the slightest. It was already done with Inferno. And that movie is 20x better than this POS. There was barely any gore in this film besides the first 20 minutes. There were things I did enjoy. I liked the grittyness, I liked the dude on the typewriter with the gashes on his face. I enjoyed the look of the cenobites. It just did not have a budget at all and it really suffered because of it. The intro scene was very interesting but didn't answer any questions. It wasn't intentional, but the budget didn't allow for them expanding on this at all. Plus, don't get me started on the "Jesus wept" scene. Adding that in there was a complete fucking insult. It was done to a character that was interesting, but once again not expanded upon. Whole thing was a mess and the addition of the Hellraiser characters to an already low budget film shows that this was not made with good intentions to the Hellraiser franchise. Crap film overall, but better than the previous installment.

Memorial Valley Massacre (1988). An eclectic group (consisting of bikers, preppies and headbangers) converge upon a newly opened campground and fall victim to a killer who grew up in the wild after being thought killed as a boy. Sounds like a Friday the 13th rip-off, but plays more like an unintentional parody (unintentional in that it's funny, though I'm pretty sure it wasn't supposed to be). A few clever touches here and there, but nothing clever enough to elevate it above the level of sub-standard slasher fare. The killer's character design makes him look like a reject from Dio's Holy Diver video. Cheap, unimaginative and silly. 2/10
