A lot of people thought we'd never see another classical sci-fi movie again, a slow burn that emerges you in information by focusing on mathematicians, linguists, biologists, etc. in a lab, solving a problem. After the "nerfing" of sci-fi, it seemed like it would never happen again and as far as i know its only happened a couple times in the past 20 years (this and Primer). And both movies tend to be a bit overrated by their fanbases because they not only made a classical movie style we just dont see anymore, but did it very well. The pacing is perfect, its just not a pace for everyone.
Same thing can be said about The VVitch. Horror movies are not made in this manner anymore. This movie is fucking chilling and in my opinion nothing short of a masterpiece.
Yet a majority of people who see it say it is the worst movie ever made because they aren't being assaulted by shoddy CGI, shitty writing and non-stop action. I felt
uneasy the entire time watching this flick. I'll take this over any big budget CGI fest or low budget, indie shitfest that relies on actors in masks and buckets of fake blood.

With that said I also think Arrival is great.

I can buy that. That's really the whole point on it's overrating. With Sci-fi being the niche genre that it is; Arrival easily fills one of those spots within it. It pretty easily touches the bases that this particular fanbase would be more interested in seeing, and it was very well done at that.

The point on pacing is fair as well, and agreed that for a movie like Arrival it's definitely spot on. Those looking for more of a mainstream sci-fi experience may like the flick, but also might possibly walk away from it somewhat underwhelmed. On one hand I can see a buddy sitting on the left of me transfixed on the highbrow messaging he's receiving from Arrival... but also just as easily see the buddy on the right of me checking his phone or occasionally nodding off.

    Overall I think it's a very good flick... but it's just not everybody's sci-fi.

Id also like to point out, and i should have before, that in this case being "overrated" is like... i gave it a 9 when at its ultimate low it probably deserves what? 8.5? Maybe an 8 if youre not a super big fan of the pacing but can keep up with the movie.

With my other example of Primer though, i think you could make a decent case that it is fairly overrated.... a different degree of overrated... (not just by .5 or 1 point, but like 2 maybe 3 depending on how high you go). Just because its such a cerebral movie that you have to watch it five r six times just to understand everything... or you can look up a timeline and come up with this, print it, and read it while you watch the movie:

    VACTBSE.jpg

    Or this one:

    primer-chart.jpg

I can definitely see how one could call Primer overrated due to the above to pictures you need to understand the movie, or to watch it half a dozen times while taking notes. And while i agree Arrival is slightly overrated, its most overrated in the .5 extra sense that people will give because they really appropriate what it is. Even if you didnt enjoy the movie you can at least recognize its good writing, good cinematography, complex but coherent story, etc.
This is a much better case of overrating IMO. I give Primer a 9 and it probably deserves a 7 or 7.5 just because you cant expect people to watch a movie that many times to understand it..... maybe even that is overrating it, its such a love it or hate it movie that there is no real middle ground.

Print one of those sheets out or you're going to be watching it at least a few times.

Jack Reacher Never Go Back -

Inferior followup. Somewhat entertaing, but mostly cliched and predictable.
