There were a number of these flicks back in the day, and just as many cheaper knock-offs that fanned the flames of 80's teen angst and chip on the shoulder badass-dom. Seen 'em all as they rolled out, but now I only kind of cringe when I see one of 'em. They were a part of my formative youth/young adult phase though so they definitely had their place.
In reality though I always felt that there was a credibility issue with peeps like this. It was kind of hard to take that "tuff" crowd seriously when they were hovering over and blustering as their ear ring glinted, hair gel collar crusted, and their pleather vinyl shined... the true warrior fashionistas of the decade of excess.

I actually just watched that for the first time last year. I'd never even heard of it before, and have no idea how it eluded me all those years. I was glad to have discovered it, though. It's not Citizen Kane, but it sure took me back to being a teen in the '80s. And I loved being a teen in the '80s, so no complaints here.

The baddies in Tuff Turf certainly fit that description. I don't mind it, though. It's the movies; if I can suspend my disbelief enough to accept that you can buy a gremlin in a China shop, I can extend it a little further and accept that gangs often consist of background dancers from a Madonna video.

True enough. They're movies. I can easily say that yeah the glittering "tough guy" flicks from yesteryear even now to this day kind of kidney punches my nostalgia into high gear but that's about it really.
I guess I don't care for 'em so much at this stage of the game because I just don't think that they were very good to begin with, and what merit they may have held left the port long ago. I just don't feel that they stand the test of time very well at all. Been there done that sort of vibe.
Don't think that suspension of disbelief angle has anything to do with it for me. Unlike Gremlins (which is time tested); this was actually a thing, and wasn't necessarily out of the realm of belief. Knew a few people just like some of these tinsel town portrayals we've seen, and I assume you probably did too. The socially inept on display but in a reality grounded storyline, with the ever present twin duo of machismo and bravado getting backseated by peeps with really bad taste.

Oh, I agree, if you look at them based on their actual merits, very few of those flicks hold up very well. Tuff Turf especially is very much of its time. Also, re-watching it, I had forgotten all about the cringey piano ballad Spader played for Richards at the posh country club LOL
But when I watch these kinds of movies, the ones I loved as a kid/teenager, I kind of shut off that more refined, more mature part of my brain and instead remember how I felt when I saw them back when. It's not always easy, though. Like, I absolutely LOVED Attack of the Killer Tomatoes when I was a kid in the late '70s, and I couldn't get enough of Surf II when it was on cable in '84, but when I watched them again as an adult, all I felt was "What the hell was I thinking? This sucks!"
Tuff Turf, though, I had no problem slipping back into "Lon, age 13" mode. I remember how much I enjoyed the juvenile wish fulfillment of it all (what teenage boy didn't want to be the cool kid who beat up all the bullies and snagged the hot girl?), but as it happens I also have some pretty personal memories inexorably linked with the flick, which only adds to the experience of seeing it again.

yea I think probably most all of the peeps from that era have similiar experiences tied to similiar movies. Any number of flicks from the USA Up All Night and USA Captain Commanders Groovy Movies archival vault would be ground zero for that generational club.
I sometimes miss the peace that those carefree days offered... even if it was only the perception thereof... i'll still take it.

Solo..... lets stop being a fanboy and call it a 4 of 10. Ill try to keep this spoiler free.....
Im still trying to figure out why they went with the actor they did.
And part of me is thinking Disney is listening to SW fans and then saying "lets do the opposite".
If they did this movie, the fans wanted an actor named Anthony Ingruber to play Han. Why? Because he actually looks like a young Harrison Ford and he does Han Solo perfectly. From the voice to his mannerisms and facial movements.... but they decide to go with this other guy and he didnt seem like Han at all. Glover was okay with Lando but again, this is not really a character you want to see re-cast.
The story itself is not very good, its not very interesting and you can tell that it comes from a short story that they had to elongate, and you can tell they did not do a very good job with cutting the movie and telling that story
Obviously the visuals were great, but who gives a shit?
I just wish Kathlene Kennedy would be fired and they'd bring someone in who knows, understands and most importantly, cares about star wars.
Here's the guy us SW fans wanted to play Han:
