Inside Man (2006). My second time seeing it and the reasons for the unnecessarily complex heist still don't make half sense.

Baby Driver (2017), about a young getaway driver named Baby who meets the girl of his dreams, only for their future to be threatened when Baby finds himself working with a homicidal psychopath on his latest job. As directed by Edgar Wright, I was expecting more of a Hot Fuzz-type send up of car chase movies, so I was a bit surprised to find it was actually more or less a straight action flick (stylish though it was). The performances are fine and the action is well-staged (with a surprisingly low amount of CGI, from what I could tell) but I'm a bit nonplussed about the climax. News reports of road construction and bad weather foreshadow obstacles for Baby to face during the climactic action sequence, only for most of said sequence to take place on-foot, with no construction problems and only a couple drops of rain. Maybe setting up those potential obstacles and then completely sidestepping them was Wright's way of playing the viewer's expectations against them, but all I felt was disappointed. You don't promise someone an ice cream sundae and then throw them a box of raisins. 5.5/10

Blow the Man Down (2020). A noble attempt at a Coen-esque murder/drama about a small coastal town apparently ran by a group of old women (who also happen to be the owners of the local brothel) and two sisters who cover up their murder-in-self-defense of a local thug. I say noble because, while the performances are serviceable, the direction is effective and it manages to maintain your interest, it doesn't really sink its teeth deep enough into either character or story to really resonate. Ultimately, you're left wondering what, exactly, was the point? 5/10

Across 110th Street (1972), about a by-the-book black cop who teams with a grizzled old white cop to hunt down a team of crooks who crashed a mafia business deal and killed everyone involved, including a couple of cops. I had only seen this once, many years ago, but have been feeling the urge to revisit it in the wake of the current sociopolitical climate. Though the plot and setting might infer otherwise, this isn't blaxploitation; rather, it's a tense urban cop thriller which, though it does rely on a couple stereotypes, feels as though it saw today's BLM movement coming from fifty years away. With its depictions of police violence against blacks, I imagine it likely ruffled some feathers during its initial release, coming in at the tail end of the 60s civil rights movement. Anthony Franciosa (star of Argento's "Tenebrae") is quite good as a thuggish mafia enforcer, and Yaphet Kotto and Anthony Quinn turn in solid performances as the lead cops as well. Dated, yes, but still eerily timely today. 7/10
