[Lon of the Dead]

The Heroic Trio (1993). I've been long overdue for a revisit of this whacky Hong Kong superhero/fantasy/action/semi-horror hybrid about a trio of female heroes who wage battle against a centuries-old subterranean eunuch with a nasty habit of kidnapping and killing babies. Tonally schizophrenic, often displaying poor taste (seriously, dead babies), ripe with melodrama one minute and extremely silly the next, but loaded with over-the-top action, fights and stunts. Credit must be given to stars Michelle Yeoh, Anita Mui, Maggie Cheung and Anthony Wong, all of whom were already highly regarded actors before appearing in this, for playing it all admirably straight, even when motorcycles are spinning horizontally through the air and characters are eating their own severed fingers. Currently available on Max, this is a decent jumping-off point for those looking to explore the more outrageous side of HK cinema. Followed the same year by a sequel called "Executioners," which is much darker, but not quite as entertaining. 6.5/10

Beaten To Death.

A decent little no-budget film, about a drug deal gone very wrong. Quite a brutal film, but yeah, this isnt the greatest thing ever. However, I really like these "survival against all odds" kind of films - so, I may give it another viewing in the distant future. Its good for the one viewing, definitely.

...nudity, masturbation, lesbianism and sado-masochism. Yes, once upon a time this was probably a real shocker - and I imagine to some severely religious folks this still would be a very controversial film. However its all pretty softcore by today's standards. There is a whole story here about desire, faith and the Devil - but I didnt really pay it much attention, I just wanted some big boobed naked nuns, so the theological points are completely lost on me... Hardly a good film, but kinda sexy in parts --- I got it with a bunch of other films, and recently discovered it on the shelf. I wanted to see it for the sexy nudity and it does deliver that!

Quiz Lady (2023), starring Awkwafina and Sandra Oh as sisters Anne and Jenny, whose flighty mother lams it to Macao to avoid an $80K debt to a loan shark who kidnaps Anne's beloved pug for ransom instead. It just so happens that Anne is a lifelong devotee of a Jeopardy-like quiz show at which she always answers every question correctly, so wily big sis Jenny hatches a plan to get her to appear on the show so they can pay off mom's debt and get the dog back. It goes without saying that the glum and introverted Anne, initially hesitant and lacking confidence, will eventually cave and appear on the show, just as it goes without saying that she will of course unseat the reining champion, pay off the debt, and resolve her and Jenny's strained sibling relationship. These things go without saying because the movie is as formulaic and predictable as they come. But what makes it entertaining is Awkafina and Oh's chemistry and how they play off one another. Oh in particular is a lot of fun as the eccentric older sister with ambitions of being a life coach (despite being glaringly unfit for the job), and the supporting cast includes Jason Schwartzman, hamming it up as the smarmy quiz champ with an 80-some game winning streak, and Will Ferrell as the genial quiz show host (I imagine it must have been tempting to channel his dour SNL Alex Trebeck parody, but he instead plays the character as genuinely nice and sweet). I won't oversell it. This isn't high art and, as mentioned, the whole thing offers not one story surprise. But it's one of those movies in which the destination isn't so much the point as the trip there, and the trip is breezy, light-hearted, and buoyed by Oh's pitch-perfect performance. 6.5/10

Kung Fu Cult Master, aka The Evil Cult.

...an early Jet Li film, and quite possibly the most absurd of Kung Fu films. They fly around and use Kung Fu super powers - its about as realistic as Harry Potter. This may sound like a negative, but its not really, the film is very entertaining. It ends quite suddenly tho, without the story even being fully played out - its like they just ran out of film or cash at that point. That is a little annoying, but doesnt take away from the fact that the film, while it lasts, is a huge amount of fun.

Jet did a number of memorable wuxia flicks throughout the '90s. If you liked Kung Fu Cult Master, check him out in the Once Upon a Time In China series, the Fong Sai Yuk series, Last Hero in China, and Swordsman 2. Actually, not just his wuxia flicks, also check out Fist of Legend, High Risk, My Father Is a Hero, Bodyguard From Beijing, Dr. Wei and the Scripture With No Words and Black Mask. Some of them are odd and whacky, but they're all entertaining.

Dont see this movie. The trailer essentially shows off the best parts of the movie and inbetween demon girls, it tries to pretend to be something its not.
