Read Production notes about it being a water critter. The found this:

Saw it opening night, loved it.
The hand held camera approach really worked, gave the movie a very realistic feel and made it very visceral. There were also some truly tense moments, it was great.
Friggin' awesome and here's hoping that there's a sequel.

I saw Cloverfield last night and loved it. I really don't think this movie would have worked if it hadn't been shot the way it had. It made it feel more real and although the character development wasn't THAT deep, you really wanted them to escape because it made it feel somewhat like you were there with them.
Possible Spoilers below?
I think that the movie not telling you much about the creature made it more frightening. You don't know where it came from or if it died for sure at the end. That sense of wonder really adds some intensity to it.
The thing I wish they would have told us though is if Lily lived or died. I'm hoping that if they do decide to make a sequel, we at least have her in it to add some connection other than the monster.
*End Spoilers*
Overall though an amazing movie. Definitely worth the $8 I paid for it.

My theatre did not respond very well to the film. Myself, I liked it for what it was. I thought that it was well thought up and very well acted. I liked not knowing anything about it, some shit just doesn't always need to be explained. I also believe that they may take a Blair Witch approach as in there could be a sequel shot on regular cam which will go into detail about things. I guess some people were expecting somebody i na white coat to pop out and explain on video camera exactly what it is, where it came from and how you need to kill it.
Personally, i'm saying thank god they didn't take that approach.
7/10

I liked the movie a lot. I keep hearing the bullshit about the CGI being questionable. The dynamic simulations and matte paintings used in the VFX were flawless. Now the only thing you coupld possibly question was the giant monster, which is easy since it didnt exist. Where as the destruction also done in 3d and matte paintings to some extent looked flawless. Of course you can question the giant monster since the fucking thing doesnt really exist.
aheemmm.. Sorry about that got into another VFX artist rant about how people can only pick off the easy 3d elements and not the more "everyday stuff"
we all sell out...it might as well be on the winning team - they live

I thought the CG was done pretty well. Much better than I Am Legend, that's for sure.

Defiitly agree with that. And if the monster was Rodney Dangerfield, it might have been the greatest movie ever.

Well I did not want to see a remake of The Blair Witch Project with a monster inserted instead. I give it a 5 out of 10. The crowed at my theater was silent after it ended. I will take it that they were shocked at how poor this remake was.

yeah that CG sabretooth tiger looks pretty bad. But I think the Mammoths look good. I'm getting less harsh on CGI (I am!!) because I know its hear to stay so I need to except it....when its not that bad. I've already said this but the CG in cloverfield didn't ruin the movie for me. What did it for me was the shaky camera. It shook worse than The Flash having an epileptic fit.
