They are completely different flicks.
But The Thing takes it easily.
It has been awhile since we've had one of these. Pretty good poll Dead

The Thing for the simple reason of the creature effects done with modest materials on an even more modest budget will continue to impress film watchers and makers for quite some time. Who cannot respect a crap-head walking across a room followed by a solid, "You got to be fucking kidding me...'. :movies:
Not thats jaws is a bad movie. I simply erspect creativity with limited funds alot. Jaws is a defining shark movie as well as monster suspense in many respects.

Our immortality is found in the words and actions of our children.
You see relatives at holidays, weddings, and funerals, but family is always with you.
Do not steal, rape, or murder. Everything else is fair game.

Jaws is a better movie imo. It also had 13 nominations, 9 wins and 3 Oscars doesn't hurt either. not to mention it stirred up the shark craze and fear of sharks for years. great movie.

Apples and oranges. I've always enjoyed the gross-out effects and claustrophobia of 'The Thing', so for me it gets the edge.
'Jaws' has far better characters.

The only reason I picked The Thing over Jaws was because of my fear of the ocean. I'll get killed by aliens before my ass will EVER go on the ocean long enough for a shark to get me.Plus The Thing is one of the rare remakes that is actually better than the original.
They are both great movies though it just all comes down to preference.

Gotta love the good ol great white shark.
Demon of the sea. Struck fear into people for years and years after the movie. Not just himself but other sharks like him.
Jaws for me. The great white was in its own league.

Jaws is definitely more original, and in terms of the quality of both movies, they're about equal, both really great, so in that regard I think there's some bias in posting that poll on this site; a natural inclination to lean towards the more violent or the more visceral experience. I still say The Thing, but I think I'm kinda biased about it too.
Although I watched The Thing again this summer, I hadn't seen it in like two years, and I thought it developed kind of slowly. Similar to Alien, with movies where the build up is to something you don't see for a while, second and third viewings just seem like they take too long to get to the good stuff.
