    Killer for "The Ruins" announced

Quote from Bloody and Disgusting, which now has me interested in this film.

Interesting news was discovered today over at USA Today where an article revealed the killer in Paramount Pictures' The Ruins, which will completely shock, and excite you! Directed by Carter Smith, the film is looking at an April 11 release. Jonathan Tucker, Laura Ramsey, Jena Malone, Shawn Ashmore, Caitlin Stasey and Joe Anderson all star. Read on for the article.

    From USA Today

The villain of The Ruins is beautiful, clever and seductive — and spends the entire story exposed on a sunny Cancun hillside.

    It's a plant.

The movie — opening April 11 and based on the novel by Scott B. Smith, who also wrote the screenplay — chronicles the experiences of young tourists who find themselves isolated at an archaeological dig in a Mexican jungle.

"As the resilience of the characters is worn down, the plant reveals itself to be more of a foe," says Smith. A foe with intellect and abilities beyond those of the average Venus flytrap.
Killer plants...something I don't think we've seen in Horror that much. This could be a fun outing.

I have the book and I need to get it read before the movie comes out. I like the idea because in my head the special effects won't suck. Thats why I think I might enjoy the book. But on a movie screen? I see them CGing the hell out of this. I mean CG would be a usefull tool for something like this. I just hope they don't go nuts with it.

Unless they take the film in a whole new direction, not so much with the CGI. Think less Day of the Triffids. There are no fast moving vines whipping out and taking off people's heads.

Instead, the plant uses mimics (sounds, smells) to lure in prey. It's drawn by blood and moves towards it like a potato will grow towards light. In the book, everything is shown after its happened pretty much. (someone wakes up with the plant already inside their wound, ect)

    Lame news.

    http://www.chud.com/index.php?type=news&id=12668

So I just read on CHUD about this and I'm let down.
SPOILERS AHEAD but for the book only I guess.

In the novel, the vine mimics things. Smells (baking bread, blood, meat) and noises (birds calls, hissing, and eventually voices). If done right in a film, it wouldn't come off as cheesey or unbelievable, but apparently the director is cutting most of the plant talking out.

    Pshh.

That's nonsense. The ending was great and fitting.
