Sweet!
Depp Does Dillinger
Johnny considers Public Enemies.
by Chris Tilly, IGN UK
UK, December 4, 2007 - With two of his projects stalling due to the writers strike, Johnny Depp is considering filling the gap by playing gangster John Dillinger in a Depression-era crime drama.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Depp was to have starred in film adaptations of either The Rum Diaries or Shantaram, but following the writing delay, he is now being wooed by director Michael Mann for his long-gestating gangster flick.
Based on Brian Burroughs' non-fiction tome Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-34, the film will not only chronicle the unlawful activities of the likes of Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson, Pretty Boy Floyd and Bonnie and Clyde, but also the efforts of J. Edgar Hoover and the F.B.I. to bring them to justice.
Universal will oversee the project and, if all the elements come together in time, production will start in Chicago in March.
