I thought this was probably one the best Johnny depp's Musical since Cry baby. Did he sing in that one? I don't remember.

For those who hate musicals, this movie proves you just aren't seeing the right ones....I'll admit, I love musicals like Hairspray and Chicago too, but there are lots of musicals like this one that are very dark...and it's Stephen Sondheim...his stuff whips everyone else's ass anyway.

Really? Ya think? I didn't think so at all. I was pleasantly surprised actually. With the exception of Helena B. Carter's voice, I was very happy with the acting and the respect of the piece. Very faithful and Depp blew my mind. He gave a very restrained Sweeney which made the character so much more intense for me. Very well done.

I was actually very impressed with Helena B. Carter as Mrs.Lovett. I thought Depp's portrayal of Sweeney was too one dimmensional and his voice was too high for the part. But, I will give that he did a great job with "My Friends".

I think a lot of my disappointment with the movie is the fact that my favorite songs are the ballads and the Judge's Johanna, and my favorite piece of dialogue is Tobias' monologue when he kill's Sweeney.

I am totally with you on her portrayal actually. I loved the sadness she brought to it. But her voice was too thin for me. But I did still like her. It wasn't distracting at all for me. As for Depp, I loved what he did with it. It was a much quieter Sweeney. I do also wish they would've kept more music for the judge also. And the fact that they never sing "God That's Good" in the song...."God That's Good!"

Excellent movie! I've always been a fan of Burton work. The only complaint I had was the ending; thought it was cut a bit short IMO.

My wife and I went to see it today.

Neither of us were familiar with the musical. All I really know is that she likes looking at Johnny Depp, plus Depp + Burton rocked in Ed Wood. It was worth what we paid, and fairly entertaining.

But to compare to other vaguely related movies:

Ed Wood had a true ensemble feeling. It wasn't just Depp + Burton. Everyone got their moment to shine, and it made for a lot of really memorable moments. Sweeney Todd was pretty much Johnny and Helena. I walked away feeling like three quarters of the cast had been neglected.

Likewise, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure was another Burton film which gave a lot of people a moment to shine even though the script dictated they not be in the film for long. Burton can do a lot better.

Then we compared it to the closest musical at hand: Cannibal! We haven't seen Cannibal in nearly three years and can still at least hum songs like "Hang the Bastard" and "Shpadoinkle." None of the tunes from Sweeney Todd were memorable beyond the parking lot.

Musically, Helena Bonham Carter could hold a note pretty well. She just needed to work her jaw and tongue properly enough to make the words come out coherently.

And in a strange aside, was this a Slytherin side-project? Snape, Wormtail and Bellatrix -- did I miss anyone? Did Burton?

There was a lot I liked about the movie -- they pulled a really great bait & switch with what looked like an obvious ending. The pacing was fun, and the rest of the cast did a great job with their three minutes apiece on screen. It just felt like there was a lot more fun to be had with that mix of personalities.

    Depp and Burton

Best described as hit and miss as many times as they have worked together. I'll probably check it when it hits HBO, etc.

I know what ya mean. I am a huge Sondheim fan, but I do agree his music tends to be non-melodic and as a singer I know how difficult it is to sing. Some of the hardest in the theatre genre.
