    Bularky.

Certain movies are debatable as to what you would consider them like Saw, Seven or as pointed out by hack, giallos. But common sense should kick in with movies like Hellboy and Signs that they are not even close to being horror.

The gist of Hellboy is a secret organization that has it's top soldier going around killing bad guys with a big gun, last time I checked that's what alot action movies are. But wait, the main character is from hell and the various bad guys are demons so now it's horror? Aliens (not Alien) and Alien vs. Predator are considered action flicks but some how Hellboy is more horror than those films?

If Signs is a horror movie then I guess Independence Day is horror aswell, since an alien species wants to kill all the humans much like what the aliens seemed to want in Signs.

I guess since Wizard of Oz has a witch in it thats horror too, oh and can't forget Harry Potter since it has those things that look like Death...

I do consider Alien and Predator horror movies.

In Signs I jumped twice (south america scene, and the fireplace scene)
I dont remember Independence Day having any scare moments.
Plus Signs was a darker movie then Indep. Day. I couldn't take that film seriously.

Dark comic, you wouldn't hear it much. *shrug*

Anyways, agreed. Hate seeing people try to simplify everything to one genre when it is obvious that it is on the fence and could be placed in X different genres without missing a beat.

The original Alien was a suspense/horror/scifi type flick. The sequals drifted away from horror and, to a lesser extent, suspense and focused on action/scifi. But the new AvPR... yea I could see the argument both way. To each their own.

Follow up thought: When I saw "The Craft" (shudder) listed as horror in many vid stores and online listings, I gave up on trusting the 'officials' to classify movies for me and started doing it myself. You know whats horror, thats all that matters.

    Wow, I mean seriously, wow.

Signs is not even close to being a horror movie, because it has "jump scares" doesn't mean that its horror. Especially since jump scares are nothing more than over used tool to make up for the lack of talent to build an atmosphere by a director.
    Cataclysm...
Well, first, in defense of the Signs statement, think of Carnival of Lost Souls, that black and white movie from I think the early sixties about the girl who gets a job as an organ player at a church in a kind of semi-haunted town. It's considered horror today, as it was considered horror back then, but I think if most people were to catch a modernized version of it on TV without knowing anything about it, they'd probably call it a suspense thriller. Signs creates the atmosphere of a horror movie, tediously and gently, but it's there.

A lot of the problem with catagorizing horror now also is that it's not always looked at as a noun, but as an adjective. If you opened one of those cans with a fuzzy spring that jumps out at you, would you say you were "horrified?" Probably not, you'd probably say you were just "startled" or something. Horror is a strong word, and we definitely live in a culture where people pick apart every word in search of something offensive or some alternate agenda. Signs is a horror movie, but weak by today's standards, and dwarfed to almost not being in the genre by movies like The Hills Have Eyes or Dawn of the Dead, but it builds itself the way an old horror movie would, building as much into its characters as into its plot.

And yeah, I can see how it sounds dumb to then go on and say Saw has brought down the means for catagorizing horror, but what I mean is that the first Saw, if it weren't as violent as it seemed (I don't really think it was that violent to begin with, never showed that guy actually cutting his foot off and most of the gore was found in crime scenes), by most means would be considered a psychological thriller. But persisting in its sequels, it seems to have convinced people that a horror movie is anything that just tries to push your buttons and make you squirm, to make you feel uncomfortable with an image, rather than discomforting you with an ambiance and set-up.

And yeah, jolt-scares are for the most part bullshit and really not even deserving of first-dates, and a definite form of compensation for a bad horror movie; they're the Porsche of cinematic technique. But they're not used as a kind of mindless instrument in Signs to remind the audience that they're watching a horror movie, they work more like orgasms. The movie builds you up with this kind of creepy atmosphere for ten minutes or so, then a jolt. Builds you up for fifteen minutes again, then another jolt; etc., etc.

'Signs' has a lot more problems going for it than the lame ass jump scares. For one, the director behind it is a complete hack and one-trick-pony and secondly, the story wasn't all that well thought out.

Aliens, who have achieved complete mastery over technology such as intergalatic space travel, decide it to be in their best interest to invade a planet 75% covered with a substance that is acid to them...
