EDIT: I just read on AICN this is a false rumor. I watched some cloverfield clip on youtube some guy made. Going on about how the monsters face is in the explosion and stupid shit like that. Some geeks are hilarious.

I think thats a pic of the smaller monsters that the bigger monster somehow releases (looks like they are shot out in pod form or something in the trailer) You can also see the shadows of these smaller monsters attacking someone behind a sheet of plastic in the trailer.

actually the big huge cloverfield fan site has said they don't believe there is any evidence to support smaller creatures.

If you look more closely at the scene from the trailer which you described, what you think is the small monster is more likely a person in one of those bio-hazardous suits, grabbing a regularly clothed person.

Popular theory I like, even if its not the real deal:

Big monster. Big monster's scales fall off and turn into small monster. Small monsters bite people. People explode, possibly into another different kind of monster.

Simple, multiple angles to work with, and a heck of alot easier to swallow than alot of the rumors out there. But again, who knows....

A Couple things I learned while surfing the web.

one that photo isn't the monster but actually a picture from Alex Conig's(art director for Cloverfield) website. Konig also works for a game company and that is where that is from.

Two, the women isn't being attacked by two creatures but actually two hazmat members that are trying to restrain her as she is turning into something else, if you can see just that clip slowly you can see her begin to expand, whether she is gonna burst or morhping into something I have no idea.
