    President Bush is a Goonie

Brolin to play Dubya in Stone's biopic.
    by Stax

January 20, 2008 - Oscar-winning filmmaker Oliver Stone, the director of Nixon and JFK, will next set his sights on sitting U.S. President George W. Bush. Bush will be Stone's next directing project, with Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men) set to play Dubya.

Stanley Weiser, who co-wrote Wall Street with Stone, penned the screenplay. Moritz Borman will produce. According to Variety, Bush hopes to begin shooting by April (if the financing comes together) in time for an election or inaugural release (that means either by November or January, for those unfamiliar with American politics).

Stone said Bush will be "a behind-the-scenes approach, similar to Nixon, to give a sense of what it's like to be in his skin. ... I'm a dramatist who is interested in people, and I have empathy for Bush as a human being, much the same as I did for Castro, Nixon, Jim Morrison, Jim Garrison and Alexander the Great."

The filmmaker added, "I want a fair, true portrait of the man. How did Bush go from an alcoholic bum to the most powerful figure in the world? It's like Frank Capra territory on one hand, but I'll also cover the demons in his private life, his bouts with his dad and his conversion to Christianity, which explains a lot of where he is coming from. It includes his belief that God personally chose him to be president of the United States, and his coming into his own with the stunning, preemptive attack on Iraq. It will contain surprises for Bush supporters and his detractors."

Stone said Brolin, whose father James Brolin played Ronald Reagan in the controversial miniseries The Reagans, "is actually better looking than Bush but has the same drive and charisma that Americans identify with Bush, who has some of that old-time movie-star swagger."

Josh Brolin's credits include The Goonies, Grindhouse, In the Valley of Elah, American Gangster, Hollow Man, and the upcoming Milk.

Platoon was top drawer, for sure, but come on, there was some damn fine "follow-up":

    The Doors
    Talk Radio
    Wall Street

even JFK (bloated as it was--still with 8 Oscar noms) and Natural Born Killers (which, admittedly, blurred the line between satire and exploitation) were some pretty compelling stuff.
