Raimi does Ryan?

March 19, 2008 - Here's one we didn't see coming. Spider-Man director Sam Raimi is hooking up with Paramount Pictures to bring Tom Clancy hero Jack Ryan back to the big screen.

Raimi, according to a Variety report, will develop and direct a series of new movies centering on the CIA analyst character who was played by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, and Ben Affleck over the course of four films from 1990 to 2002.

The films will reportedly feature a younger Ryan who is at a more formative point in his career than in the prior movies. The four previous flicks in the Ryanverse are The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger, and The Sum of All Fears.

Variety adds that the studio may opt to set the film in the present day, with a global threat triggering the action. This would seem to indicate that the movie won't be based on an existing Clancy novel.

Paramount appears to have the movie on the fast track with a 2010 summer release planned. The studio will hunt for a screenwriter while Raimi directs Drag Me to Hell, his upcoming Universal-based horror film.

While Raimi seems like a weird choice, given his love of slapsticky moments and visual "Sam cam" flourishes, he's proven he can handle films outside of his comfort zone before like A Simple Plan. And, hey, there's always a chance Bruce Campbell might show up as the younger Jack Ryan's dad or something.

Haven't really seen the old ones, no idea who Jack is and stuff, but for Raimi I'll give it a shot, even if I don't like his Spiderman.
