The problem with threads like these is people use their opinion of movies they hate while everyone around them liked when in actuality threads like these should be about the whole world rather than your circle of friends.

opinionated example - Dawn of the Dead is overrated! it's boring and not scary!

Real example - Blair Witch Project is overrated. It didn't live up to the hype nor was it worth the praise it received by the media

Highly Overrated? - anything involving Carpenter except They Live. Debra Hill carried him throughout most of his career. She was the brains behind the operation. While Carpenter may have put together the visuals. Most of the good writing was a result of Debra Hill and her hard work RIP.

Add to that list - Dawn 04, TCM 03, Goonies, Critters, Lost Boys, 28 Days Later, Final Destination, American Psycho, IKWYDLS and Creepshow.

Highly Underrated? - Army of Darkness, Childs Play 2, Night 90, Scream 3, Prom Night, Silent Night, Deadly Night and Nightmare 6.

The way societal breakdown and chaos was depicted in the film was rather frightening. No offense, but you may have missed the point of the movie. 'Scary' isn't always about a masked boogeyman coming at you with a butcher knife.

'Dawn of the Dead' deserves every ounce of its praise and status.

Horror should not be about morality tales. We go to escape...not to be taught a lesson. I think his undertone was WAY too blatant in this movie....same with movies like Saw. I think it's much more effective when it's subtle. And as I said before, the production value is shit. Very poorly shot in my opinion.

Regardless if its satire is straight-forward and obvious, I honestly don't see how there could be anything wrong with wanting something more out a tired genre. Sure, there's a time and a place for a mindlessly gory flicks, but overall... most horror films aren't good movies, most horror films are shit. Especially considering the rut the genre has been in for the past twenty or so years (especially now with all the torture porn shit), seeing something with some intelligence, character development, decent writing, etc. is always refreshing... and when it balances it with good gore, it's even more impressive.

The original Dawn of the Dead is a brilliant continuation to a nightmare. Great characters and story. Excellent script and pretty decent acting. Zombies remained menacing IMO.
