To sum it up I hope that we are talking about new PG-13 movies.
Old black and white originals that you mentioned were classics. They new and fresh to the silver screen...audiences weren't exposed to as much as they are now. They could pull off a PG or PG13 rating because at that time you needed very little to really scare the audience. That's what I love about the classiscs from the 1930's to 1950's.

The Others was all right, but not scary. My cousin kept saying "holy shit" at the ending. First time I heard someone say it out loud ahahahah.

But yeah, this was when PG-13 horror movies were a rarity, and we weren't tired of them.

PG13 horror movies can work for me if they're supernatural...PG13 slashers just don't work. It irritates me, and instead of even trying to make the lack of blood and gore credible, like having the killer strangle or suffocate his victims, they make the guy stab people or slash their throats and leave no blood behind (I'm looking at YOU, Prom Night 2008). It annoys me.

yeah I agree. Although I did watch Critters the other day and its PG-13 and pretty entertaining. But most of the time stuff that supposed to be real bloody but not cuz of the PG-13 rating end up sucking. Supernatural stuff thats actually trying to scare you though. I don't mind it.

As someone already stated. PG-13 really comes down to marketing.

Rated R sells but not like PG-13.

I have always been a fan of the horror genre. Having said that, most horror films suck. With straight-to-video releases dominating the genre these days...one could argue that the genre sucks more than it ever has. I've been involved in some of these R to PG-13/ NC-17 to R film rate downs, and I can tell you that (in my experience) the R to PG-13 rate down is driven by the studios...while the NC-17 to R rate down is always driven by the MPAA. Here's a few that I worked on that had ratings problems:

THE CAVE: Rated R script. Was shot as a rated R film. Plenty of "F" bombs and plenty of blood. The studio didn't like the cut. They ultimately didn't like the film. In their infinite wisdom they thought no one else would like it. So...they cut the language, cut the violence, took the PG-13 so that more people would be able to buy tickets, and released an inferior product. The film got bad reviews. It made a little bit of money, but not much. The studio heads are vindicated. "See...we told you it was bad." They decided not to spend the money to open the cut back up for an unrated director's cut on DVD.
BOTTOME LINE: The script was bad from day one. They hired a first time director (formerly a 2nd unit DP). They started in the hole, and never dug themselves out. A year later THE DESCENT comes out and shows them how to make their movie properly.

THE COVENANT: Bad script. Bad movie. Was never going to be good. Pet project of the studio head. Opened #1, and made 40 million dollars worldwide. Thus the studio head is vindicated.
BOTTOM LINE: The film opened #1 because there was nothing else worth a shit to see that weekend. (People went to the movies anyway) It was the lowest grossing #1 film ever at the time.

PATHOLOGY: Lots of sex. Lots of violence. Lots of drug use. Tons of profanity. Very depraved. Oddly enough...not a bad little film. Somehow managed to get an R rating the first time out without any cuts. (One of the truest displays of hypocrisy by the MPAA I have ever seen. This is an NC-17 movie in my opinion)
BOTTOM LINE: Studio couldn't figure out how to market the film. Politics ensued. The film was released to a mere 46 screens two weeks ago. (Although it's doing fairly well in foreign markets.) If I had to guess, I'd say that this film would be a big hit among members on this board! Most will have to wait for the DVD release.

MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN: Very bloody. Rated NC-17 several times before finally being trimmed enough to get an R. Can't say too much, because the film isn't out yet.
BOTTOM LINE: The studio is obligated to release the film. Theater chains won't show NC-17 films. You can't mass-advertise NC-17 films. Studio has no choice but to make cuts to get an R. Fans are pissed at the MPAA because they feel cheated out of their blood and guts.

There are many reasons why PG-13 horror films are made. The article make a good point or two in that it IS usually (if not always) about money. But that's the film business. It's an industry. IT'S ALL ABOUT MONEY. Every genre. Every film. Nothing groundbreaking or earth-shattering about this piece of information. The approach, however, isn't that some were tailored to be scary, and others were tailored for a rating. They ALL were made to turn a profit. Some hit. Some miss. This is always the case. (in any genre) What I find troubling is the onslaught or remakes in the horror genre. Nothing is safe. Saw the trailer for the remake of IT'S ALIVE. It will most likely be PG-13. The original was PG.

On a related note, I was in a meeting once on a horror film when the subject of nudity came up. One of the studio heads said, "the genre doesn't call for it." I silently screamed. The only non-porn genre that DOES call for nudity is the horror genre. BOTTOM LINE: A lot of the guys at the top don't know shit about the genres they're working in. They're older businessmen who don't watch horror films. Fans vindicate them by spending money to go see their movies. As long as that continues...they will keep making them. Now they have even more tricks up their sleeves because movies are getting cheaper and cheaper to make.

Just an opinion based on some of my experiences for what it's worth.

good article. And I like the fact their realistic about it. A PG-13 horror flick can be good. It's the reasons behind it that make it fail or succeed. I agree with what they say here.

That is a good article. Thanks for sharing!

R-rated horror is better than PG-13, But sometimes the directors go too far & make it Torture Porn, OR Stupid rather than a good flick, & that's when the goold ole Asian &... PG-13 Ghost Stories come on in!
