    The Countess

To be honest, I'm still not even sure if this is going to be at all "horror"

    :mhehe:

The story of Countess Bathory is pretty horrific.

There are two ways this movie can go. They can either choose to go by the myth of her wanting to be a werewolf, or the one of her being an intensely angry sadist, which is more accurate.

Erzebet Báthory's story just totally fascinated me when I read it. She acquired her sadistic ways from a skanky thought-to-be-lesbian aunt. She was addicted to bondage and all kinds of perverted fetishes. I'm not sure if the stories of her bathing in blood to maintain a youthful appearance are true, but she did order her staff to kidnap and kill peasant girls for their blood. And she was sooo cruel. She was said to actually faint sometimes in an orgasmic way when yelling for her servants to beat her victims harder and harder.

I've finally bought the dvd yesterday (it was released 2 days ago here) and seen it tonight.

It's pretty sober. Not horrific at all, nearly no action, not really gory (just a few drops of blood). The movie relies on the context (history, religion, society) and an added love story to explain her demise.

I thought Darvulia would have a greater role although she's one of the main characters. I think the movie could have been a little bit creepier and darker but Julie Delpy seems to try to focus on history rather than fantasy and she said she didn't want to direct a horror movie so the movie is rather a movie with costumes.

    6 or maybe 6,5/10

    PS: this is necromancy

This would have made an awesome horror, especially if it did play on what she did and not make it into what she wished she was.

From what I've read about her, she did not bathe in their blood. It was all about the sadism and torture for her. She would also throw these girls naked out into the snow and pour water on them so they froze to death, and would put hot pokers into their genitals, among other things. ("Encyclopedia of Serial Killers" by Michael Newton) She was an evil and sadistic woman - yet so very fascinating because of this. The book I cited also mentions that she killed hundreds of peasant girls and it wasn't until she started preying upon the nobility that she was caught and imprisoned.

This is one of my fave movies, I've seen it some 10 times.
I'm very into European royalty and nobility, especially the
insane and cruel ones: Vlad; Erzebeth; Ivan ... those kind
    of personas.
I wouldn't call this film it a horror flick, though.
    It's a historical piece.
