Well it looks like the shit-tastic duo of Rob Cohen and Michael Bay are determined to get this done.

I bet Dracula ends up being twilight-esque. The original is class. Wolfman can't be cgi either, his make-up in the original was friggin' awesome.

Fun Fact: Rob Cohen was exec. producer on the original, which I think is more of a fond childhood memory film than anything else. It's not the Goonies or Gremlins or even The Explorers, not even close to their league in anything but its technical craft which keeps it consistent with Cohen and Bay doing it today.

I know that won't be a popular opinion but I had those childhood memories kinda tarnished when I anxiously bought the much anticipated DVD release some years back. Maybe it's just my lack of patience for tongue-in-cheek humor in my old age.

Truth is, not doing the werewolf effects digitally would make the wolfman mostly redundant. Nobody has improved, through traditional means, werewolf transformation or design since the early 1980s. Nobody. My theory is even the best attempts that have been made using digital tools have been hampered by trying to keep them consistent with and like the practical interpretations of the '80s rather than embrace taking the concept to places impossible to do practically or with an actor in make-up (ie. something that actually has the proportions and characteristics of a wolf, which few designs have ever even attempted to incorporate).

    Dog Soliders did it perfectly

The early 80's was fantastic for Werewolves..but I think film makers are just lazy. Look at Dog Soldiers. Marshall had actors on stilts for god sakes

They were neat looking designs, as stills, but they were basically actors in taxidermy heads on stilts. There was almost no articulation, if any (I'll have to go back and watch it again) and no real transformation. Technically, from an execution standpoint, these were well-executed Halloween costumes. These did not advance the technology of werewolf effects beyond state-of-the-art 1981 or makeup effects in general. They were good designs but functional and largely representational.

Don't get me wrong, this is my favorite modern werewolf design. But the execution was what his modest budget would allow and he instead used old school (read: older than 1980s) filmmaking techniques to work around these limitations quite well. This was smart, rather than go for a poorly executed but more ambitious shot design or (worse) go with less-than-professional digital services (ala The Asylum) he concentrated on the action, script and getting good actors.

The thing I liked most about these were that they did imply more wolflike proportions, along the lines of what Bottin did for The Howling but with even less caricature in the face (almost to the point of looking like taxidermy heads on actor bodies). The ears need to be long as does the snout to still read "wolf" (unlike American Were"wolf" in London or various wolf-men). Long, lanky and lean features are what were lost in the transition from wolf to what we know as the dog (which is a manmade race of wolf).

I'd rather no CGI, practical effects only and I don't even have to see full shots of the damn thing to be satisfied. An American Werewolf In London is perfect and those effects blow anything CGI out of the water. CGI is used because of laziness and funds, period. There is no way it can be called necessity for a damn werewolf. Besides if we are talking about Monster Squad how detailed of a transformation do you think they will actually be able to show?

I can see it now with Bay being involved...werewolf transformation with the backdrop of something exploding in slow motion with a random helicopter thrown in.

I think it is all a matter of when you saw it. When it was originally released me and my friends WERE the kids in this movie. We went to see it as a group and the film holds a special place from my childhood. It has lost its luster a bit now that I am 36, however I let my daughter watch it (she is 9) and she loved it.

In the 80s it was all about "Holy shit these bladder fx are awesome we all gotta use them!" Now it seems to be cgi because for one, bottom dollar it's more affordable and reliable than practical FX (There are a lot of wasted takes with animatronics because they fail or the puppeteers aren't in sync, etc) and also the trend is to make werewolves larger than humans. Most new flicks they look like the incredible hulk with fur or 10ft tall marmaduke.

Personally I think with human to werewolf transformations is doesn't require much. I like Jack Pierce's Original make up on Lon Chaney Jr. and I even thought the subdued look of extra hair and fangs worked on Jack Nicholson in Wolf. For me a little goes a long way.

Probably, the first time I saw it was like two years ago. Thought it was good, but not as awesome as everyone was describing. Then I rewatched it last year and liked it even less.
