I'm sure if you watched it as a kid you would love it.
I saw it as an adult as well so although I thought it was good it was nothing amazing.
like The Labyrinth. Absolutely love it,I force everyone to watch that movie. Most people hate it if they've never seen it as a kid.

The only thing that annoys me about the original is when UK tv stations edit it down to put on tv at 4 pm so kids can see it pre-watershed. Last time it was on It was 15 minutes shorter than the original version and all the "scary" parts were cut. No matter what people say about this, it's a favourite of mine and I think it always will be.

Most new flicks they look like the incredible hulk with fur or 10ft tall marmaduke...
Comparing apples to apples, top quality make-up to top quality CGI, digital is not more affordable. Digital is only more affordable when you go with non-professionals, or at least, when you make biased or naive comparisons.

Until proven otherwise, digital techniques still have room to grow and have been improving all the time. Practical techniques for this stuff peaked in 1981 and haven't been improved since then. Even the "top guys" from this era have not been able meet or exceed the impact their work had back then and the push forward they made for their crafts and everyone working in their crafts.

The baton may have been handed off but nobody has picked it up. Great then isn't really good enough now. But let's just say for the sake of argument that great then is just fine now. Still, nobody seems to even be able to do that good today. Not even the guys that did it back then.

Rick Baker is two for two in recent memory starting out on a high profile film initially intended as a mostly practical werewolf show only to be replaced after dailies start rolling in. In both cases, though I'm sure it wasn't totally because of his work, productions virtually halted, adding almost an additional year to their completion, while solutions to finishing the films were found. These weren't good films but they both shared the same moment of, "how do we fix this?" and the practical werewolf was at the center of that question. That's not just tabloid gossip, I was working at both studios at the time during the production halt and regroup.

Similar story with Amalgamated Dynamics and their wolves for Wolf, though, in that case, the studio didn't really have much of a way to fix things so the worst of it, in the end scene, they chose to go with an editorial solution because there really wasn't any way to fix it digitally back then. Rick Baker was also involved in this show but did a reasonably good execution of a 1941 werewolf and wasn't even asked to hit his own mark, much less pass it. Thankfully he wasn't responsible for the animatronic wolves. I got to see their dailies while on an interview tour and they were awful. Like Knotts Berry Farm awful.

Quaint, ironic anachronism doesn't work for a film unless it has the name Wes Anderson in the title cards.

Same here. There is a special category for these Henson films and the consistent but mesmerizing un-reality of it all. I don't support trying to improve on these high-art puppetry films in any way. Labyrinth, the Dark Crystal, etc., they're perfect the way they are.

That might seem contradictory to my stance on certain other subject but I don't see any problem. I recognize the difference between an artistic decision and one of technology and limitations. Puppeteering is its own art form to me.

Same here. I saw it again recently, and I still think it holds up perfectly.

    Spoiler...
I love the long shot near the end where Dracula strides through all the cops, taking down each attacker in turn.

The MS '87 movie is a classic!

I’m not going to bash it, but it is absolutely impossible to beat or even equal the original. I hope they stick with the entire original concept & they don't need CGI every fuckin monster. That would just kill the film for me.

Nothing beats the original, nothing. The only use I have for remakes is that hopefully it will shine some light on the original.

I bet they probably will use CGI, and it'll look terrible.
