5 Dolls for an August Moon
The story is pretty basic, a little confusing and hardly interesting. What thee fuck..this script sucked.
I enjoy one scene, well several of the same scene that they just kept revisiting
Spoiler...
which shows the bodies being bagged and stored in the meat freezer.
That was awesome!
The story is a pretty simple one: wealthy couples gather on a remote Mediterranean island. Three of the men are investors and one is the inventor of an industrial formula that he refuses to sell them. One by one the members of the group start turning up dead. The phone’s disconnected and the boat has disappeared.....
The story doesn’t really have much of a hook to it. Most of the killings take place off screen and character development is especially weak and confusing. For the most part it’s tough to keep up with who’s who and there’s a further confusing part with a young girl running around the island that doesn’t seem connected to anyone. It put me at a place where I didn't care who got killed next, nor did I care very much about whodunit.
I read Bava made no pretensions on this project. To him it was just a paycheck, directed from a script by Mario di Nardo. He claimed that it was the worst film he ever made. I also read that more people think Knives of the Avenger was worse than this film.
I'm looking further into Mario Bava films. Next I may visit Hatchet for the Honeymoon.
