    1980s...best era of films ever?

Just watched afew different random movies over the last few days on TV. The Breakfast Club, Predator, ROTLD, Uncle Buck, Commando etc. It got me thinking about all the great, great movies of the 80s. From so many, many filmmakers and spanning so many genres.

One could argue it was the absolute pinnacle of overall films spanning all genres. Me being a 90s kid who loves a great many things 90s and grew up in the 90s. It still amazes me how many quality films there were in the 80s. It may not have the best overall movies of all time but IMO definitely the best that most of the genres could offer. To name afew examples.

Sly Stallone, Bruce Willis and Arnie along with the lesser faces transforming the action genre with guys like John Mc Tiernan behind the lense. John Hughes, Jim and John Belushi and the brat pack absolutely dominating comedy with so many classics with a wide variety of budding 80s stars and comedians alike. Of course the horror genre which doesnt need much of an intro since we talk about it enough. Various war movies made by a variety of directors. Steven Spielberg and his work with budding actors/actresses who would go on to be stars. Quality dramas and coming of age films along the way, etc.

Thats just a handful of examples without scratching the surface. How do you feel about it? It is debateable but one could make a case that it was truly one of if not the best era of films from all genres ever IMO.

There will be a poll if you care to just use that.

I said yes. I obviously didn't grow up in the 80's but my mom and grandparents all showed me everything 80's. I love the movies and music from that decade. I love the cloths and personality that went with it as well. The movies that were release then had a warm feeling to everything no matter what genre. Film makers didn't try to go too real or go all out for an academy award. They just wrote something they cared about and wanted people to see. I think the suits for the last 2 decades have been trying to play it safe and go with what people know and not try and risk things on something fresh with the possibility of failing. I get this feeling that in the 80's people just wanted to have fun and hang out and those were the kinds of movies that were produced. Movies that had fun dialogue with a bunch of hi-jinks. Today just seems like everyone wants to be professional and resolved and I see that reflected in the movies that are being made.

Of course. For music as well. Hair metal bands ruled. Most of today's music is total crap. And we will get one decent horror film out of 10. Or from any genre for that matter

80's just happened to have die hard, Aliens, terminator, and the slasher genre peak in it is all. It was better than the 70's though.

Anything before was like watching cardboard cutouts walk and talk. It was stiff and and everything looked deliberate with a few exceptions. Anything after while the acting improved the creativity in the stories declined and became repetitive especially today when all we get is force fed remakes. All in my opinion of course.
