    Good remakes

    There have been plenty of threads bashing remakes. May be interesting to talk about remakes horror and non that lived up to or surpassed the original.

    Like, so many people out there were trying to track this down. And it just...got delivered on a tweet. What the hell.

    "The individual's rights will be protected only so long as they don't conflict with the state."

    watch your words, they become actions;
    watch your actions, they become habits;

    The Thomas crown affair was a good remake, and I agree with most of dm's list especially the fly.

    Oh I almost forgot the 2008 version of Dawn Of The Dead, I am not saying it's better than the original but it's a good film in its own right

    This was originally called LA Takedown, a made-for-TV movie back in the 80s. Film Threat magazine did a great little piece comparing the two shortly after Heat came out. It might be the one-and-only, near shot-for-shot, word-for-word remake that totally blows away the original (both Thomas Crown Affair and Ocean's Eleven are far better than their originals but they only share the most basic similarities at the script level and nothing in style).

    I was initially inclined to say that one was also directed by Michael Mann but perhaps he just produced it?

    Well Done

    Michael Mann directed it, with Bonnie Zimmerman doing the casting......

Someone could make the argument that the 80s kitsch more or less makes it as dated and/or something to be appreciated in the context of its era, like the noir original, but I think, even today, it's the most relatable and relevant version.

    edit: my brother and I went to see the restored, anniversary release a few years ago at the Arclight Cinema/Cineramadome in Hollyweird. We were seriously like the only two whiteboys in this huge theatre filled with Latino gangbangers from all over the city. We figured there was a memo passed out calling a unanimous cease-fire because the screening was drama free and everyone was just their to enjoy the show. It was pretty awesome, actually, though getting out of the parking garage was another story and I don't think I'd been that nervous, inching along in my car, since the Rodney King riots, LOL.

    Pacino is no Paul Muni, but loveable in that role nevertheless.

    See "The Life of Emile Zola" if you want to experience Paul Muni at his best.
