    VHS movies

I have a pretty good collection of vhs movies I started many years ago, and when dvd's took over, I started buying them. In all this time I have kept my vhs movies on a book shelf in my living room and just added to them my dvd's. Yesterday I decided to move my vhs movies into a different room, since my dvd's were starting to pile up pretty high around the bookshelf. I'm not really going anywhere with this other than it was kind of depresing going through all these movies thinking it will take me forever to get DVD copies of them, if that was an ulimate goal. The only reason I would even consider it is tapes don't last forever. I have a copy of Phantasm 2 that I watched a couple weeks ago and it was almost unwatchable. I don't know, just kinda rambling, but wondering if anybody else try's replacing their vhs collection, or not worry about finding copies of things like Gormet Zombie Chef from Hell? Maybe I'm just showing my age with all this.

I had over 500 VHS tapes about 6 years ago and decided to get rid of all of them but a very selected few. It sucked because I put a lot of $$ and thought into that collection. Now my dvd collection is nearing the 1300 unit mark and am afraid that soon I will be doing the same with Blue-ray discs, I guess is just the nature of the beast.

I've done it to some extent. For me the big deal was replacing all of my ancient NOES tapes (bought from a video store) with the boxed set.

I have a device called a Dazzle which does seem to make transferring from tape to DVD go a lot faster and smoother. Paid about $40 or $50 for the basic model. Already transferred my uncut NOES 5, Little Witches both of my rare Green Jello tapes and a couple of other things with it. I believe it even has a "straight to dvd" mode -- press play on the vcr, press record on the computer, and do something else for a while.

Then again, we also replaced Street Fighter the Movie (Raul Julia), Crossroads (The good one with Steve Vai) Ed Wood, Rock & Rule, and Ralph Bakshi's Wizards on good store bought dvds.

I've been going about 50/50, I guess. Rare movies get transferred and more common ones get purchased.

I have a couple hundred myself, but, I have found that I've come across more defective DVD's in my time than any of the VHS I have which is impressive considering many of them were purchased from old video stores. The only problem with VHS is the picture quality on some can be so dark you can't see what's going on.
I have been waiting for a lot of them to come to DVD. I just hate the "new" cover art they give some. For example WTF was with the cover for Happy Birthday to Me?? I took the lobby card with the original cover art and placed it over the stupid one that was chosen for the DVD release. I almost didn't buy it cause I thought it was some shitty remake.

To quote someone else who put it well.

"Renting or buying VHS were a big thing to do, something everyone liked to do"

I had a big collection myself, but have since trimmed it down. I still have my VCR around but I need VHS/DVD transfer set myself.

I'd have to say one of the things I like most about my vhs collection is alot of the original covers. Though things like ANOES box DVD is pretty cool looking on the bookshelf, some of these covers they make for dvd re-issues are terrible. I haven't saw the happy birthday to me cover yet, but I might look it up for a good laugh.

I have kept a few of my older and rarer vhs tapes, ones with great box art and ones that will never see a dvd release ( for example Bloody New Year which has an awesome embossed cover), there is some:oogle:thing about the atmosphere and feeling you get from taking a tape from one of those big ass boxes and watching a vhs that you dont get from a dvd, much like a cd and a vinyl record. Its also a nostalgia trip and im always shocked when people say they dont even own a vcr anymore.

I still have my old VHS tapes. Some that I really should get replace with the DVD versions. I still keep them for vacation trips. My dad's conversion van only has a VCR plugged into the built-in television. So it's nice to watch some movies on our trips to kill some time.

The original cover art is why I still collect some aside from that being the only way to view some movies. It is also a nice trip down memory lane. I remember as a kid going to old video stores and looking for the creepiest, coolest covers and looking over countless VHS.
I mostly own the big box or clam shells, which usually have awesome cover art. Even the bad movies back then had cool covers: Offerings, Bloody New Year, Frenchman's Farm, Unsane (American title for Tenebre), and CHUD which has the original, and in my opinion better ending. That's the other thing, sometimes the VHS' have different endings, music, or sequences than the DVD's.

The original ending to C.H.U.D. is the one featured on the DVD.
In the 80's VHS they chopped out about 40 minutes of footage, and used the diner scene in the middle of the film to end it.
It was shown in the Cinema's with a running time well over 100 minutes, and it didn't have the ending that was on the VHS.. They trimmed the movie a lot and rearranged a lot of the scenes for the home video release.

I have about 100 or more VHS tapes still, I dust one off from time to time.

I guess I like the "chopped" version better. That's the one I remember as a kid and it makes more sense the way it ended as it sets up for the unfortunate sequel.

I'm looking at both the DVD and VHS right now, DVD: 96 mins VHS: 88 mins

A difference of 8 mins. I'm more used to the setup of the VHS as I was too young to see it in theaters. I had figured they added the different ending to the DVD, though I much prefer the VHS version.

They didn't add all the extra footage they edited out, but the original theatrical ending made it on there.
The DVD restored some of the cut footage, although most is still missing.

Had about 300 VHS, sold them as a bulk deal on Craigslist about a year ago. I never watched them anymore and don't even have a VCR hooked up anymore. I replaced some on DVD, have about 300 dvd but I'm now really getting my blu-ray collection going. Closing in on 100

I might have the smallest VHS/DVD collection on the board.
I still have 60 VHS and 150 DVD.
I keep my VHS because some of the titles are not on DVD like Bloodstalkers (and at the time I got it The Forest.) Plus they have cool cover art!
