Why does Halloween II get such a bad rep?

Over the years, the more I watch this, the more I think it wasn't really all that bad.

It sets a similar feeling to the original, the mask looks fantastic, Myers seems more sinister than the original, and there are a ton of eerie hospital scenes.

The only scenes that I don't like (spoilers) ares the scenes with the nurse in the hot tub and the one with the hammer to the forehead. They're just too violent and too much of a breakaway from the way Myers was in the original.

That said, there are so many things to like about it. The soundtrack is different but still good and for a horror flick, the acting is pretty good (minus Brackett's deputy).

I love the scenes of Myers walking around the hospital, and the scene where he's chasing Laurie through the storage room.

I'd give it a solid 3/5 stars (as a horror movie sequel).

Additionally, I think Halloween III is underrated. It's not really good or anything, but it's a decent and fun watch.

Everything else after that blows. The mid-to-late 80's killed the franchise, and everything thereafter drove the final nails into the coffin.

I didn't think II had a bad rep. I always, as well I most people I know, enjoy the second more than any other sequel released.

I agree with everything you said H78. I have always liked Halloween II. Halloween III is a fun view. I don't look at ratings.

Yeah, I always liked pt. 2

    SPOILER
For some reason, it was creepy to me in the beginning when the girl is talking to her friend on the phone about the crimes and how she can hear the sirens. I liked how they showed a complete outside characters view on the events before they used her for the body count.

Part 3 just sucked IMO. I never liked it.

Almost every film that follows a classic, gets a bad rap.
Furthermore reviewers are generally unkind to horror movies :nono:

I actually enjoyed Halloween III, if you take it for what it is it's a fun watch, The music coming from the tv sets used to freak me out as a kid.

Its a fun movie and I suppose what helps it the most is the direct continuity with the first film.

It was the perfect way to end the Micheal Myers aspect of the Halloween series and start fresh which is what Carpenter wanted before selling the rights to Akkad exclusively after Halloween 3.

Still the one thing that hurts this movie is the hospital being empty. Small suburban town or not. No hospital is like that, no way no how. I enjoy the new score in this film maybe more so than the original score because I felt like it had more ambient feel to it and it was louder.

Its the closest thing your gonna get to the original. Still I feel like Halloween 6 while clearly a dead horse by then. Was dark and brutal and I prefer a more brutal Myers. Sure the beauty of the original was less is more with gore and violence. Still I felt like I enjoyed the brutal aspect of Myers more and the symbolism of Part 6 in both versions.

Of the big Part 2s. Its better than Nightmare 2 but loses points against Friday 2 which went on to conclude the original killer and introduce a new icon in the horror industry at the time which makes Friday 2 infinitely more famous. Halloween 2 would've been the same thing if not more iconic if it did indeed end Myers for good as Carpenter intended.

While the series is in the coffin. Myers will always live on whether the Akkads bring him new life or someone else does IMO. In that respect, he is and always will be an icon and a staple to the genre.

Halloween 2 became more violent than the predecessor because of Friday the 13th and it's sequel. Suspense wasn't enough, you needed to up the kills.

    And Halloween 4 is cool.

I actually bought H2 not so long ago.
I haven't seen it in a good while and must say that it wasn't very bad.
It had a decent pace and fair amount of spatter, plus- the boiling spa scene is classic.
As stated several times above me, it had to be a horror hating critic that led to any truely harsh word about H2.:popcorn2:

H2 sucked from beginning to end primarily due to a dumb unispired script created for the sole purpose to cash in on the success of the first Halloween. There is so much wrong with this movie.

I love Halloween 2 primarily because it brings back the same feel that the original Halloween did. At the time you gotta give for having one of the biggest twist ever finding out that Laurie is Michael's sister. Great movie, Halloween III gets the bad rep. But I still like that one as well.

The scenes of him walking around the hospital scared the shit out of me. I work in a hospital and sometimes when i have to work later at night its sooooo creepy. Theres like nobody there and its just weird. But anyshway...

I liked it, and havent really heard anyone say anything negative about it.

Halloween II was not bad really due to it being the sequel to the original atleast it is better than Halloween Resurrection.

I think it was a cash in. The original had so much going for it with Michael lurking in the shadows, standing in the background. He just lurked around. Then he let Jamie Lee and her friends have it. In the sequel, all that was lost and Michael was a killing machine, offing everyone in not very inventive ways. It was a cash in on the slasher craze that didn't ring true to its original for me. It's not a bad film. Just not a great one like its predecessor.
