This is a flick I hadn't heard of until recently during my many Netflix browsing sessions. To my surprise, this turned out to be a very good film. I knew it received good reviews before seeing it, but like I usually do, I go in with low-expectations and occasionally come out pleased, which is exactly what happened with this flick.
A drama with some comedic elements, the flick basically follows an anti-social and paranoid self-proclaimed "best private investigator in the world" named Daryl Zero (Bill Pullman). His latest job involves a blackmailing scheme against a shady businessman. Accompanied by his smart side-kick (Ben Stiller), the duo attempt to unravel the mystery behind the blackmailer and the dubious businessman.
Off-the-bat, the flick pretty much had me hooked. From the clever dialogue and above-average script, the movie offered more than your typical Hollywood detective story. The duo of Stiller and Pullman are very reminiscent of the brilliant Sherlock Holmes and his trusty side-kick Watson, and would likely please fans of that particular sub-genre. I'm a sucker for a good detective story and that's exactly what I got here.
Sure, the story could have been a bit smarter towards the end, but the performances and great execution more than made up for it, in my opinion. Worth a check :thumbup3:
