    Underrated/Underappreciated characters in Horror Movies

Often times the most notable characters in any horror movie end up being the hero/heroine or villain/obstacle, etc but sometimes there are characters that go under the radar. I'll just name a couple of my favorites.

Dr Crews played by Terry Kiser in F13th Part 7 New Blood.

As cliche as he was, I always thought that was the charm of his character. A doctor who has no real stake in helping the recovering heroine Tina (Lar Park Lincoln) with her fathers death. His only real goal was exploiting the girl for her telekinesis along the way hiding the evidence, getting her mother killed and ulimately dying one of the more gruesome deaths in the Friday series.

For shits and giggles, I always thought it would've been funny he had somehow lived and escaped. He knew what was up in the area long before the shit went down yet he stayed there like a true Friday character. Still I found the character pretty fun and deceitful.

The Old Man/Drayton Sawyer played by Jim Siedow in TCM and TCM 2

Given way to the likes of Leatherface, the hitchhiker and choptop throughout the first two films. I always enjoyed this character the most of the family. As much as I didnt care for TCM 2, even then I thought Jim Siedow stole the show in that film just as much as he did in the original.

He was the somewhat 'civilized' member of the family on some levels while still flipping switches to insanity in instances in both films. I always enjoyed the scene in the original when he makes believe to Sally that everything was gonna be aight but as she takes a look around and he gets his shit with that grin of his. I thought that was one of the best moments of that film and she replies 'wha, what are you doing?' or something to that effect.

What are some of your favorite characters that dont really get much recognition?

    Kitty Winn - The Exorcist

Without her character being around to watch and help out with Chris McNeil's daughter Regan, she would have lost her mind.

Sharon (Kitty Winn) was her assistant and helped with finding doctors, giving Regan medicine, bathing her, making sure doctors kept their appointments, and feeding her (at first). I can't think of any one character more underappreciated considering what she went through in that house.

Captain Bosch. He was after those C.H.U.D.'s with a vengeance! I like the transition of his character throughout the movie.

The priest from Rawhead Rex. Why is he not discussed more often?

I also enjoyed Stacy Keach as Pat Quid in Road Games. He acts alone throughout most of the movie, but you barely notice because of his acidic wit and charm. An underrated film, with an underrated character!

Barbara from Night Of The Living Dead. At the end she really tried to help Helen when the zombies had come through the door, that is till she saw her brother Johnny and he took her away!!!!!!!!

I wouldn't say Barbara went "under the radar" as a character in NOTLD.

Highly agree. I just love that whole movie. Most don't.

Roland Kincaid in Nightmare 3 and 4.

I loved that character in all of his 80's "tough guy" glory. Proving that token black guys can kick ass AND say "muthafucka" a lot. His shining moment was in the fourth when he looks out in the junk yard and yells "Freddy...pussy!". While every other character was screaming and running, Kincaid wanted to throw down until the end.

The Terenzi Brothers in Killer Klowns

These guys rocked. The only reason they started in the ice cream business was to score from some hungry chubs. We're talking about guys so desperate that when encountered with alien clown women they sucked it up and saw it as an opportunity. These characters are amazing. You just have to see them to believe them.

Roach in The People Under The Stairs

I recall seeing this in the theaters when I was very young and wishing I had a guy like Roach living in my walls. I loved the way he toyed around with the parents and tormented them.
    Spoiler...
No kidding, when I saw this as a young kid I almost teared during the scene where he died.

    Father McGruder in Dead-Alive

I really shouldn't have to explain this one.

Suicide in Return of the Living Dead

Talk about a guy dedicated to his image. I loved this character. Just looking at his mean mug always made me laugh in this film. He's such a turd and doesn't even know it. Another character that you just have to witness. His defensive reaction to what he is wearing is priceless.

Ha! I forgot about Suicide! I always remember my mom's reaction after he meets the Tarman, " But he was my favourite character!" And I looked over at her and said, "But he was such a jerk..you liked him?" and she said, "He's not a jerk, he's just misunderstood!" She cracks me up sometimes.
I think if I got the right guy, he was killed shortly after filming ROTLD on the set of another movie in a stunt gone wrong.

Sorry, but you got the wrong guy. Mark Venturini is his real name and he did die, but he died from leukemia... Also I didn't know he was in F13th New Beginning

I could have sworn I read that somewhere. I guess I confused him with another actor. I also "read" that the actor who played Horace, Brent Chalem, in The Monster Squad died from pneumonia. There are a lot of great underrated characters popping up here.

Not underrated but I think The Tall Man is probably my favorite horror icon after Myers. Hauer in the Hitcher is another great one too.

The original "The Hitcher" is a perfect horror film. One of the greatest on screen villains ever.
