So, last night I had the pleasure of finally seeing Alien vs Predator: Requiem. Well, it was something.
Story takes place right where the last one left off, with the Predalien coming out and raising hell, which in turn kills off all the other Predators and crashes the ship. A couple of Face Huggers escape on landing and right away starts impregnating. The Predators atleast manage to get an SOS out to there home planet and seeing what's happened, a Predator for whome we can assume is incharge of cleaning up messes like this comes to fix it. The film also covers several human stories that're going on while this all happens.
I once read that the recent Incredible Hulk remake simply fixed what people complained about in 03 version. I'd say this also applies here. People where pissed at the PG-13 rating and the low count on gore and what not. So in opening scene we have a Face Hugger get a 8 year old kid. As if that wasn't shocking enough, we saw the Predalien in the Newborn department of a hospital with a bunch of newborn babies...we don't see it but we can assume what's about to happen.
People complained about the Predators dieing to fast (even though they where un-experinced youths) and being friendly with the Humans. So, the main Predator this time isn't here to make friends, he's got a job to do and nothing is going to stop him.
Finally, they complained it focused too much on the humans, so this time they toned down on the human involvment. This actully hurt the film more however. The acting is decent at best, it's almost as if they where thinking "Fuck it, they're not gonna watch this for us anyways". They where right if they thought that, but you can still try.
The film also had scenes that seemed to pay homage to the past films of both franchises. The Ambush on the National Guard reminded me of Aliens when the Millitary are taken by surprise in the reactor. The sharif finding the skinned victem reminded me of the first Predator film when they find the lost Americans skinned. That scene however lacked sense to me since the Predator had a job to do, making me ask why would he be interested in a trophy?
So all in all, them changing what people didn't like about the first film was a hit and miss. Some things they made better, other things they made worse. I will say I do concider this a step up, but not by much. Reports are saying that the VS. franchise might be dead soon and they might go back to doing films for each series again. I hope they don't stop cause I still think the series should be pushed into the future and have a Predator vs Ripley show down in a film.
I'll give it a 6.5 out of 10. The film was better then the light hearted themed AVP, it's just not gonna go up there with the High Ranking Predator or Aliens.
