I'm a big fan of the games and I remember they would tease us with a small flyer that came with the game that said a movie would be "coming soon". Of course that wasn't exactly the case, as a movie didn't actually happen until five-or-so years later.
I didn't exactly mind Mark Wahlberg as Max, but pretty much hated all the other actors in the film. The movie has many faults, and one of'em is the fact that almost all the supporting roles in the movie were played by named celebs. It's almost as if they knew the movie wouldn't be good, but figured they'd throw as many celebs at us anyway in hopes that maybe people would see it for them. Some of which had pretty pointless roles.
The biggest problem I had with the movie is the lack of action -- WTF!! The game is full of action and plays great homage to the action films of John Woo, yet the movie itself has very little of it? What the hell happened? The film attempts to build up the story, and throw a couple very brief action scenes in the first hour, but the real action doesn't pick up until the last 20-minutes, and even then, it's not all that great.
On the plus side, they did manage to capture the look and some of the style of the game. Too bad everything else was a disappointment As a live-action adaptation from the game, this gets a 5/10, but if I ignore the fact that it's based on a great game and accept it as it is, I'd give it a 6/10.
If they do go ahead with a sequel, unless they load it with action and not overload the cast with an unncessary amount of familiar faces, then I will be skipping it.
