Robert Downey Jr. vs. Heath Ledger (best performance)

There's been alot of Oscar talk surrounding Heath Ledger's performance as The Joker and RD Jr.'s role in Tropic Thunder...both in the best supporting actor role.

If I had to vote on that right now...I'd give the award to HL for The Joker...but I'd give RD Jr. Best Actor as Iron Man over Heath Ledger as The Joker in a heart beat (hypothetical situation))

    How would you vote?

The thought of an Oscar for Bobby has never crossed my mind. I say nominate Ledger and Eckhart for BSA, as both of them took characters on paper and put them on the screen perfectly.

Easily RDJ for best actor. Eckhart for supporting actor.

Ledger did a very good job, but the first half of his performance didn't feel right to me.

Let the Oscar Buzz Begin! This time, a few strange stories are brewing:

Heath Ledger as Best Supporting Actor?

Warner Bros. is officially campaigning for Heath Ledger to get a posthumous Best Supporting Actor nod for his performance as The Joker in The Dark Knight. This has left some complaining that Heath get the Best Actor nod. Maybe WB knows something about the Best Actor category that we don't know?

Robert Downey Jr. for Best Support Actor in Tropic Thunder

Paramount Studios will back an Academy campaign for Robert Downey Jr.'s supporting role in Tropic Thunder.

Downey Jr. played Kirk Lazarus playing Sgt. Osiris, an African American soldier in the "movie" they were filming in Tropic Thunder. RDJ was hands-down the best part of the film, as was discussed in our review.

It's not often that a comedy gets any recognition from the Academy. Then again, comic book movies never do either.

Heath as the Joker gets my vote, but there is no doubt that RDJ played the Tony Stark to a T. RDJ IS Tony Stark.

RDJ performance in Tropic Thunder has to be noted as well as I thought, as well as many, that he really made that movie, he carried it, if you will.

I still think Heath's performance was haunting and dare I say legendary. He captured the screen then your emotions. He was able to pull you into the "dark side" and have you behind him 100%. He was charismatic, funny, shocking, and intelligent. It is very rare for an actor to first have you seated watching a movie then the moment they take the screen and perform make you forget where you are.

Ledger no doubt. A truly great performance that embodies the character of the Joker. RDJ was good too and was awesome as Stark. But the academy wouldnt have the balls to nominate Jr for that

Since, for some reason, RDJ is for his role in Tropic Thunder and not Iron Man, easily Heath Ledger. However, if it was for his role as Tony Stark, it would definitely be a bit closer.

They both did a fine job. I hope they're both, at the very least, nominated for something. They deserve it.

Entertainmet Weekly is being lame, here. WB knows the same thing everyone else does: just how gun-shy the Academy tends to be of doing anything that could remotely be seen as "edgy."

The Warners think the supporting actor category is a surer bet for a win for Ledger.

Ledger in a heartbeat. There are great performances every year, but like Daniel Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood, Ledger embodied the role and was completely lost in it and added more depth and detail than I've seen from most performances.

As much as I enjoyed Downey Jr. in Iron Man, I don't see how it's award worthy? I can make a case for Tropic Thunder, but not Iron Man.

So I see. No worries - RDJ is awesome, he's just... not as awesome as Heath. According to me, anyway. Then again, I'm biased.
