At least in the case of Freddy Krueger's case, there is a bit of personality to him, and it's not just a guy in a mask. That being said, I believe if given the right material, just about anyone could play a psychotic dream demon/child killer/burn victim.

    From IMDB Today

"Horror legend Freddy Krueger is returning to the big screen in a new Nightmare On Elm Street movie. Brad Fuller, the producer behind recent Texas Chainsaw Massacre remakes, has been given the job of breathing life into the long-running franchise - and he reveals he has been bombarded by calls from major stars keen to play the villainous Krueger, a part played eight times in movies by actor Robert Englund.

Fuller tells Starpulse.com, "Here's the crazy part. We are getting incoming calls for the first time in our career with actors of real calibre and quality who are pursuing that role, which is absolutely astonishing to us."

If they were to go young for the part... I wouldn't mind seeing Jay Baruchel step into the role.

I know this is out of left field but.......what about Mark Hamill?

he's really good with voices Ex. Joker and is capable of making a good character. Plus he is older these days and has more age on his face like Robert Englund.

If they really wanted to spend big bucks and take a risk Johnny Depp could probably pull off a Freddy no one could have thought of. At least it would be interesting, if nothing else.

I personally think they should just stick with Robert Englund though, it's his role and he's hidden behind makeup so it really doesn't matter how old he is. If they wanted to they could have a younger actor play any scenes that might require Freddy before the burning and then have Englund for the rest.

The remake of Child's Play is keeping Brad Douriff as the voice of Chucky, so why not keep Englund as Freddy?

lol, I knew it was only a matter of time before someone suggested Johnny Depp. I agree with the second part. Over-all it would be best to keep Englund, but if they want to reboot and make it a competive franchise (Halloween, Friday the 13th, Saw) than they need a new Freddy to widen the fan base.

Depp is a great character actor but he's too much of a pretty boy, he's not believable as a the ghost of a child-molester.

A lot of people said Heath Ledger was too much of a pretty boy to be believable as the Joker.

Depp showed in Sweeney Todd that he can play a sadistic character, so I don't think Freddy would be beyond his talents. As someone else said no one believed Heath Ledger would be good as the Joker, and look what happened there.

hmm... You have a good point Repo, although I didn't see Sweeney Todd (I couldn't get past the musical aspect of it) I guess I did assume the same thing about Ledger when he was cast as the Joker.

But for my $12.50 its still Robert Knepper.

Attack of The Show confirmed the new Freddy is Jackie Earle Haley, who we will see as Rorschach in The Watchmen. I don't think thats a bad choice. I still don't think you can replace Robert Englund, but if your gonna do it anyway I think Jackie is a good idea. He's got a very distinct featured face like Robert Englund (the nose) and he is very good at doing creepy voices, as you can tell in the watchmen trailer (the gravely voice talking in the trailer is rorshach). I'm interested to see how he does.
