    Tarantino...

on my way home from Sundance me and my friends got in a kinda argument/discussion about Quentin Tarantino. So heres a question I have for
you guys. Do you guys think that hes the greatest/genius/brilliant or
whatever it is that people say?

I think that hes really good, that hes really good. but my friend was fucking
proclaiming him to be as if he was Jesus or something.

I think what Quentin has done was basically master his craft like completely
master it, but hes never really done anything different, all his films are
basically the same Tarantino-esque types of film. Never really took a chance
or doing something out of character, and that is not necessarly bad its just
you can't see anything different and so he's never really been bad.

like someone like Speilberg who has taken in my mind so many chances he has
such a variety of films, thats one some of his flicks don't do so well but he at
least takes chances to do something different.

    IDK.

I don't care for much of Tarantino.

I enjoy From Dusk Till Dawn the most.

I think he like many others out there have a fan base that give him more credit than he deserves and yes he really never does seem to try and go outside the box.

He was the shit in many eyes in the 90s but now it just seems all typical and nothing new from him.

He's one of my favorite directors because his movies are different from a lot of other film makers. I would say that his only competition for dialogue is Kevin Smith and the way Tarantino has his movies played out on screen is, for lack of a better word, abstract from everyone else. I like how his movies generally don't play from beginning to end. Instead, it's like a puzzle you have piece while watching it.

He's okay. Kill Bill and Death Proof are the only movies of his I own and have cared to watch more than once.

I think Tarantino is one of the most gifted writers working in film today, no one writes like he does, his dialogue is very intriguing and original.

His directing skill is decent but he blatantly uses shots and techniques from other directors. Many times it is him paying homage to movies he admires and directors he respects. At his core he is a huge film fan.

He has a god variety of films under his belt from the very few that he has done:

    Reservoir Dogs/Pulp Fiction: Crime/gangster homage
    Jackie Brown: Blacksploitation Homage
    Kill Bill: Kung-Fu homage
Deathproof: 70s car chase grindhouse homage

I think all were very successful at what he was going for and got there in a fun way.

He is probably one of my favorite film makers in hollywood and I always look forward to his movies. He is not a godsend or some genius (except for the Bonnie Situation segment of Pulp Fiction...that's some genius shit) he simply knows what he likes and makes movies that he thinks others will like.

From Dusk Til Dawn is enjoyable and is I still get good laughs out of the movie especially Cheech.

Pulp Fiction one of my favorite non horror movies I can watch strictly because of its dialogue

Kill Bill and KB2 is great eye candy

I think he is a great writer and a solid director.

    * I also heard he is why Brolin got the main part in No Country for Old Men. Is that true?

Uhhhh....I only liked From Dusk Til Dawn, Kill Bill Vol. 1. I'd have to disagree on your friend's decision how he/she thinks he's Jesus of Filmmaking...Tarantino's a good writer and Director, but not great.

another thing I forgot to mention it Tarantino's music selection in his movies, the choices are eclectic and memorable, really cementing scenes into your head.

If anyone saw True Romance the one thing I missed from that movie was "Tarantino music." He wrote it but didn't direct it, the dialoge was great and Tony Scott did a great job directing but that special flair of the music selection was missing.

He's good, but a terribly overrated guy. I love Pulp Fiction, but the rest of his movies, for me, are on the so-so side. Resevoir Dogs, as cool as it is, is overrated. The Kill Bill movies are nothing more than homage films. Cool homage films, but they lack the clever storylines and snappy dialogue of his earlier films. Death Proof I can take or leave, as I'm not particularly into car movies. I've never seen Jackie Brown

And when's he gonna get off his "creative genius" ass and make another movie?

People think he steals... but he openly admits to paying homage. Did spielberg steal the inverted vertigo shot for Jaws? No he was paying homage to Hitchcock. In all honesty I think he is the genius he is called. His films are sold on his name, because fans no going into it thats what they are getting. Pulp Fiction is amazing, his best film by far. Jakie Brown has some great acting, and great characters, as does Resovoir Dogs. The Kill Bills, while not in the same leauge, are some great eye candy movies. Death proof, I in the minority, but I think is a great homage to the Octane movies of the 60's and 70's.
