and another and im swear im done, service pack 2 updated me to IE8, but my campus website is not working properly. It says some of the content isn't supported because its an inline frame. No biggie, you just click again and it pops it into a new page. But my questions is why? The IT guy has given me all these kinds of things to do to fix it and nothing works.

Seriously, is there something wrong with my laptop? I want to revert back to IE7 because I am used to it, but to do that I have to uninstall IE8 and its not listed in my programs list....

I gots a real issue... A friend of mine has had his comp go out. one minute it froze up and when he tried to start it back up windows wouldn't start and a message came up

    Missing Boot ini file

windows root system32 hal.dll corrupt or missing

I tried re-installing Windows with back-up disks but nothing happens, can't even open a Command Prompt screen. Is my friend fucked? Should we try just installing a new hard drive all together?

I've had similar issues happen to me in the past and the only resolution I could come up with was to just do a complete reinstall. Sometimes if you use the original disc you can repair the OS, but it didn't work for me. I also tried ways to re-install the one missing windows file, but that also didn't work.

If you haven't yet, I'd suggest just doing a search on the issue, because you may find a way to just get it running without having to do a complete re-install. Otherwise, my only solution is to just reinstall the OS with an original disc.

since my last post here I've had to re-install missing files on my OS. Now I'm thinking a complete reinstall of my laptop OS is the best thing and I have the original disks.

On my HP desktop there is a very simple System Restore option you can get to by hitting F11 and control but my Dell laptop doesn't seem to have that feature. My hope is that I can correctly pull off the OS reinstall without fucking it up. Otherwise I might have to pick up a copy of Windows 7 and hope for da best.

Reinstalled the O.S. and everything seemed ok. Now I have a clean copy of XP on my Dell laptop but I can't connect through my wireless connection. Seems all the drivers and utilities have also been erased. Luckily I still have the disk for that but I can't figure out how to use the programs. Tried to extract the WLAN drivers but that didn't seem to do anything. At least I still have a trusty old desktop.

Back to the Dell Message Boards for me, If anyone else has tried to reinstall anO.S. and had a similar prob please lemme know how you fixed it.

I've added PC Tools Firewall Plus as another good free firewall agent. I've been using it ever since I replaced Online Armor after it was getting falsely detected as a virus by Avast. It's pretty good and supposed to offer better security than Online Armor, but either is fine.
