According to The Hollywood Reporter, New Line and Platinum Dunes are already developing a follow-up to their recently released FRIDAY THE 13TH reboot. This despite the fact that, after a massive opening, the new FRIDAY plunged 80.4 percent at the box office in its second weekend, one of the biggest such drops in cinema history.
friday09sequelnewsDamian Shannon and Mark Swift, who penned Jason Voorhees’ latest adventure (and also FREDDY VS. JASON), are reportedly beginning work on a new screenplay. While FRIDAY ’09 drew story elements from the first four installments of the original Paramount franchise, the sequel will take no cues from any prior features but instead will be an all-new adventure for the masked one (so no telekinetic teen adversaries or trips to New York, apparently). Also in question is the involvement of actors Jared Padalecki and Amanda Righetti, whose characters survived Jason’s latest rampage but who have busy schedules shooting the TV series SUPERNATURAL and THE MENTALIST, respectively.
Definitely unlikely to return is director Marcus Nispel, who has expressed disinterest in coming back for a second go-round and is considering other projects at the moment. While there’s no green light for the new FRIDAY 2 (the two companies have the Samuel Bayer-directed NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET redux set to roll in a couple of months), sources suggest Jason could be slashing the screen again by the second half of 2010.
