Most definitely man. Although it lurks in the back of our mind, we need constant reminders, and maybe it will force change.

Prior to the F13th remake, the only PD film I felt did any justice to the original was The Hitcher. It made up for that horrible intro (and missing Rutger Hauer :unhappy With a great NIN sequence and a revamped semi scene.

However, Strt has a really great point as well. Examples of NOTLD, Exorcist, NOES, and so on and so forth, are genre defining films, once they became the boogie men and bumps in the night, they were quickly developed into sequel schlock to make a quick buck. Oh boy, were the 90's watered down! On one side though, through the mediocrity of crappy slashers that were releassed (UL, IKWYDLS, H2O, you get the drift) they did at least introduce the genre to a younger audience, who are now in their 20's.

What our beloved genre needs is to wake up to the fact that we need a new boogie man, or good ideas should not be produced poorly/cranked out and put through the Weinstein grinder. Couple this with the sound effects people like Aja (and RZ & PD are finally starting to pick up on) include to raise the tension in a film, and then hopefully, we can move back into the direction of originality.

I don't know if horror was ever smart enough to be "dumbed down" in all reality. It's not like it was this masterful genre that suddenly turned to shit.

Blasphemey! No, but really C.H.U.D., there are very intelligent horror movies out there, and those are the one's that give us the creeps. The dumb/campy horror movies are purposefully made as such for more of a fun thrill ride, not to fuck us up. Some intelligent horror:

    Rosemary's Baby
    The Exorcist
    Texas Chainsaw Massacre
    Event Horizon
    In the mouth of madness
    Hellraiser
    Pet Semetary
    The Shining
    Scanners
    Lord of Illusions

Here are 10 that still hold true to the creeps/intelligence that horror has always had. This is what it needs to get back to.

The genre and the age that it's in i'm worried that there are really no new ideas to even come up with. Hence countless remakes and Hollywood ass ramming Japanese films to death. I agree with Mike when he said he never thought he would live to see the day where Michael Myers,Freddy Kruger and Jason would all see remakes. I also agree with Fright because I have turned to overseas films and lower budget(both action and horror) because atleast i'm vieweing a thought out idea rather than an over budget remake or film based on a comic book. But its a business and money needs to be made.

I wonder if the remakes of the classic icons being remade is to expose them to a newer generation not aware of the originals. When I saw Dawn of the Dead 2004 (for free mind you, thanks eb games) Me and my friend started talking about Romeros and people turned to us asking what the hell were we talking about. People who are not lovers of the genre will always be reached by the constant remakes.Like I said, money has to be made.

Les films de France suis tres bien.

France is where it is at these days. Haute Tension, Ils, A L'interieur, Martyrs, and even Frontier(s). All fantastic, gripping, brutal (but tasteful) films that know how to swirl fear and blood perfectly.

The US horror cinema is not in the same position. For a matter of fact, I think it has divided itself between the two factors. One extreme is in movies like Hostel, which tries so hard to be gross that it forgets to scare the viewer. Yeah, it may make them sick, but there is quite a fine line between nausea and terror. As a huge fan of French horror movies, I obviously do not find blood tasteless, but when it overcomes the main objective of haunting the viewer, that blood becomes pointless.

A horror movie is not truly successful unless it scares the viewer. I do not find movies like Hostel or Saw to be scary. I think they loose their terror in the forced blood. When gore comes logically from events in a movie, I think it is fine and even a positive attribute, but when the gore comes from strapping down the victim with the intention of making a mess, I feel no fear.

Opposite this is the terrible PG13 ghost stories that are as dry as a bone, yet can not scare anyone because their rating does not allow it. The MPAA does not just rate horror movies according to blood, but also according to the level of tension/terror. This is why I perfer the R rating. Thankfully, the PG13 kingdom seems to be falling apart.

Some US movies are finding the balance, like The Hills Have Eyes, Last House on the Left, Friday the 13th, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre. However, here is another problem. These are all remakes. I suppose this complaint is not really one voiced by me, because I think a good movie is a good movie and that the script's origin is not a paramount issue. Of course I would like to see more original films, but I much rather go to the theater and see Last House on the Left again, insted of the tripe CGI trip that is Haunting in Connecticut.

No doubt because it also fits the order. First came Halloween followed by Friday the 13th then a Nightmare on Elm Street then a tad later Hellraiser. Same order goes with the remakes. I wouldn't be surprised if an Exorcist remake starts floating around. I am surprised it hasn't.

I'm not saying that there aren't genuinely good horror movies out there (which, in turn, can be considered GOOD movies without the genre tag on them). What I'm saying is that for every good horror movie, there's probably 15-30 horror movies that are shit. Granted, I'm a fan of z-grade trash cinema...so technical merits among other things don't bother me...but rather, I'm referencing the true credibility of the films.

I agree with It Only Dies, France has seriously been stepping it up on the horror front, and like he said even though America is stuck in remake mode its still better than watered down bland horror

    1. House of a 1000 Corpses (TCM rip-off)

It was not necessarily a TCM rip-off, he also claimed most of the idea from the classical low-budget "House of 7 Corpses. But I see where you are getting the TCM from. And I do agree with the majority of what KoolMike is stating, and agree with the 10 years of shitty horror movies, grasping the low budget and foreign films. One of my goals in life is to make a horror movie worth while, and I have had the goal ever since....freshman year. But lack a lot of experience in part. What I'm mainly trying to accomplish is a story..a GOOD story with no links towards previous films, or original ideas such as ghosts, vampires(would enjoy making one though), werewolves, the whole dying for dumb reason effect, etc. Laugh if you choose, but that's just a goal of mine..rather it be accomplished or not. I'm a really big on anthology horror...so you can elaborate more than sticking to one subject.
