Midnight Mass (2021), Mike Flanagan's Netflix horror series about a new priest who comes to a small island populated by pious citizens and begins performing miracles. An interesting story, routinely solid performances (though Hamish Linklater's performance as the earnest priest with a secret is legit outstanding) and I liked how the show starts off almost blasé, but gradually increases in intensity as it goes along. Definitely a slow burn, but worth the time. One of the most impressive things about the series for me is the number of single-shot scenes and sequences it contains. For instance, there's a beach scene I would swear goes on for five minutes straight without a single cut, involving multiple characters and conversations and what was surely pages and pages of dialogue and complex scene blocking, and it's absolutely flawless. Not a single missed line or stumble. And that's just one such scene. It does go a bit off the rails in the final stretch, and it doesn't quite stick the landing, but overall I enjoyed it. 7.5/10

This is exactly what I loved about this installment. Flanagan does this very well in his material. I've liked all of his Netflix one and done installments he had under contract to do. Actually just finished The Fall of the House of Usher and quite enjoyed that one as well. You'll get plenty enough dialogue driven examples in that one too. It's one of the charms that makes all of these installments extra special and memorable.
I especially liked the "lemon" speech in Usher. Disturbingly accurate and observant concerning the potential evils and seedy dark side of Capitalism.
Simply brilliant

I actually watched Usher the week before I watched Midnight Mass (binged it with my sister who was here visiting for a week) but forgot to write about it here. I think it's just as good as Mass -- actually better in some aspects -- though none of the performances, as good as they are, match Linklater's in Mass, IMO. Weirdly, I've enjoyed all the Flanagan series that I've seen, but I haven't liked any of his stand-alone movies (except Gerald's Game, which was better than I expected it to be).

I thought this was just great... Quite a wild ride, story well crafted, well acted. High score.
