Psych, the episode "Tuesday the 17th." Star James Roday is a massive horror fan and the show had its share of horror homage episodes, this one in particular being a shout out to '80s slasher flicks. It's arguably one of the best homage eps, loaded to the gills with slasher movie references. Roday's girlish scream upon discovering a body and being chased by the killer is priceless. Man, this show was fun. They never should have canceled it.

Ozarks season 2......... not finished yet, on episode... six? five? One of the two. Anyway, will edit later. I have A LOT to say about this show. This is a fake good tv show, im not sure why i didnt see it in the first season... maybe ill have to watch it again or maybe it simply didnt show up until the show continued. But its not very good, its lazy writing and i was not shocked to find out that the four main writers of the show had less than six writing credits combined to their names.

Okay, so i finished Ozark season 2, had a day or so to really absorb and think about what i saw and now i will go into detail of why this series is not very good. Hopefully i can do this fairly quickly as i have some BBQ to attend to....Warning a lot of spoilers coming up.
This show really wants to be breaking bad and you can tell that its looking toward BB for influence and writing direction. I think this is a huge mistake as Breaking Bad was not as good as a lot of people think. They wrote themselves into holes and brick walls a lot of the time and you kind of have to pay attention to catch these moments. If there is a new drama that wants to look up to any tv show, they need to be looking at Better Call Saul, the far superior show and IMO possibly the best written and executed show in the history of TV.
I will start by mentioning the writers and their lack of experience. Generally writers with no experience in hollywood, get shitty gigs for a while. And there is actually high value in doing this, you learn what to do, what not to do, what is cheap writing, what is character drama versus story telling, etc. As mentioned before, the four main writers on this show have six total... combined... writing credits to their name before this show and i think when we look at this show their lack of experience in writing and story telling is glaring.
Im just going to start listing some of the most obvious problems ive seen.
- On one hand i can count the number of characters who have more depth than the basics of their role. If the show was story driven this would not be a huge issue, but its not, its more of a character drama but this writing is generally on par with daytime soap operas. A great example is Ruth's father, he is a bad guy and that is it. There is no further expansion on this character than... he's just bad... So everything he does has to be bad.
- When we do see characters expanded on, its generally in a "coincidence" or lazy way. For example. The man who they bought the house from, this random guy.... i can buy him having the family move in and ending up being a bit of mentor and protective of the son... i can totally buy this. Where they lose me is when all the sudden this random guy that they never knew, just happens to also be an old school gangster with connections to the same people and that all the sudden they need him. This is a role for a different character.
- When we do finally see characters progress, its not really a progression, they don't actually change. They simply do something they wouldn't normally do. The police are a great example of this, things police or feds would never do, are regularly done and the only purpose it serves is to get these characters out of a situation.
- Speaking of what characters would and would not normally do, characters actions are very inconsistent.A great example here is the Mexican mafia woman. She has her people follow Ruth and they take pictures of her speaking with an FBI agent. For some reason, probably because the script says so, she decides not to kill this girl. Now if we had not already established, and continued to establish, that this was a cartel, willing to remove anyone who was a potential threat, this would make sense or be okay in the least. But we already established that they are willing to murder someone simply for seeing them. Or that she was willing to torture and murder a man who she had worked with for a decade, after he sold tainted drugs that she knew he didnt taint. There is no consistency of logic here. If she is willing to murder a colleague who is a cash cow for her, while knowing he was not responsible for what happened and knowing he did not speak to police... why did Ruth live? A girl she didnt know, was not an asset to her and who she photographed speaking to feds.
- The "Ticking Clock" oh man, i don't think ive ever seen this method used as much as i do in this show. We're talking probably once an episode we see this used. For those who do not know what this is, its pretty self explanatory.... "you have 1 hour to do this", "you have 24 hours to do this", a concept that builds tension if properly and sparingly used, but when overused it ends up simply being lazy and creates for more ridiculous scenario's and situations.
- The feds.... these have to be the most incompetent people in the history of tv. These people are openly speaking in their house, on their phones, texting each other, etc......... this is supposed to be a realistic and serious show, and we know for a fact that all those calls and data is being logged and recorded already. It takes nothing for the feds to get warrants on this shit. Its pretty much all feds do now-a-days but its not even being mentioned here.
The state in general seems to be fairly incompetent. DCF handing over a baby to some random guy with no background check, no paperwork, the baby just got there... really?
- When there is an actual focus on the story, because of how everything is handled it becomes ultra predictable. You have a crazed religious father with a new born baby who kidnaps Bluth's wife. We have the redneck woman who is holding up the casino deal unless the Bluth's get her a baby to raise... gee... i wonder whats going to happen.
I might edit this later and add some more, but i have some ribs that need attending to. But hopefully my point was made.
