Euro Horror movies vs American Remakes

I wanted to start a thread that really has affected all of us, ''the horror fan.'' The rise of the Euro- Horror craze and the disembowling of the american horror film. America has dominated horror movies for a long time but then the Asians invaded and took the crown away..well sorta. We could have taken it back, we are America for gosh sake but we are lazy. Hollywood put out all these PG-13 crap fests and did remakes of much better older movies. But over in Europe, directors were pushing boundaries, and what's happened now is that they're better at horror movies than we are....or are they

Trying to think of really awesome american horror the last year or so that would be remembered 10 years from now, The Strangers, okay, Rob Zombie's Halloween..ummm I liked it. The Mist, Cloverfield, I dunno..you guys probally have your favourites. Check out these though...Inside (France) Rec (Spain) 28 Days Later (UK) Martyrs(France) Frontier(s)(France) Haute Tension (France)The Descent (UK)Let the Right One In (Sweden)The Orphanage (Spain). Those are the ones I have just seen...these are suppose to be awesome too.. Calvaire (Belgium), Nightwatch (Russia)Severance (UK)and Dead Set (UK) I think that sometimes foreign films are more attractive because they take us to a different place and with actors that often are less familiar ....wow shame on us.

"That was pretty good," doesn't make it anymore. To get noticed, you need to be outrageous, insane and completely over the line. We may do the big hollywood movie blockbusters like no other but when it comes to horror..wtf happened! Has our time passed? Have we played the PG-13 card too much and europe swooped in and grabbed the winning pot?

Your thoughts fellow horror lovers....tell us what you think.

If you like trendy chick flick type horror films like Twilight (which isn't a horror flick, but supernatural romance) or uninspired remakes then the American brand is likely your cup of tea. If on the other hand you're a little more open minded and don't mind reading subtitles I think the Euro flicks have been bringing more to the table lately. Some of there films aren't the most original works ever but atleast they have some balls and deliver the goods, instead of pan outs and off-screen deaths. The acting is almost always better in the foreign films aswell. DOTD remake and countless other recent American horror entries have been lacking there and in the gore department.
There are so many gripes I have about the current trend of the domestic blend it's not even funny

I think you kind of hit it on the button. We held the crown of horror in the 70's, 80's, and 90's... although a lot of horror buffs could care less about most of the 90's line-up with the toned down WB slashers.

Then, although I don't care for most Asian horrors, it was def. a craze for a short while. Now it's France and the UK.

All I know if that as long as someone is making good horror, and the "lacking" countries pop out some rare gems, I'm good.

Face it Hollywood has been castrated , and no longer has any balls. Nothing memorable has come out of hollywood for sometime. Problem lies in that hollywood worships the almighty dollar, and won't' take risks....especially the horror genre. I have faced the fact that many of my age just don't frequent the cinemas as much as they used to. Its more of the younger generations that go any more. There lies some of the problem. In order for hollywood to cash in on any of these films they feel they have to cater to the younger set ( meaning those that can't legaly watch "R" rated movies) so they step down on the gore/horror/shock/scares etc and make films that are now rated PG-13.So noew potentially everyone can get in to see these " watered down wastes of my time" . Sad thing is that the movie doesn't need to be that shocking or gory to get me to go to the theater , but give me a good solid storyline, and I'll be there. I think hollywood has lost site of this as well. Sorry but if they're going to hold back on making a film I wiould rather hold onto my wallet.

I used to love the asian horror films, but even they have been a bit repetative , and I have lost some interest in going to see them. I have been into the euro-horror for quite a long time. Many of the gialli I have had were on VHS, and sadly the tapes just haven't held up very well . So now I've been trying to replace them with dvd formats. Eurohorror has always been more liberal with the gore which for the most part gives them an edge....especially when it comes to the horror genre .

Like, so many people out there were trying to track this down. And it just...got delivered on a tweet. What the hell.

America is too sensitive nowadays and we have to make sure we don't offend anyone. So our horror has gone down the tubes. The movie studios here are stuck on PG13 so they can at least try to get back the money they spent on that film. Our creativity also went out the door when they realized that the remake makes money too.

Good american horror still exists but its been relegated to DTV shots instead of big theatrical releases.

Movies like Hatchet, Behind the Mask, Splinter, Midnight Meat Train, Diary of the Dead, Wrong Turn 2, Abominable, Feast, Gravedancers, Santa's Slay, and Dead End are a few examples.

Grindhouse, The Mist, Slither, Land of the Dead, Hostel, Freddy Vs. Jason, and others are examples of original american horror that did infact make it to the theaters. Some flopped, some hit it big.

Is all american horror remakes and teeny cash cows? most certainly not

Does american horror lack the intensity and depth of our European brethren? Sadly, yes...but then again it always has so IMO nothing is new.

Those all suck hard and suffer from immature scripts and penis jokes in the case of Feast and Wrong Turn 2 especially. All of the others are below mediocrity and are nowhere near any of the Euro flicks with the Exception of the shitty ass Frontier(s). Which is by far the worst film to be mentioned in this thread, even worse than the dreaded PG-13 films

ok so tell me when American horror didnt consist of immature scripts and penis jokes.

Anyone that talks bad about Santa's slay has no sense of humor and cant sit back and have a good time with a movie.

    Edit:
My point isnt that American horror movies arent shallow...they are and they pretty much always have been with a few exceptions. My point is that Euro horror has always been a "little deeper" and offered a more visceral experience. The only difference now is that these movies make their way over to the US faster and gain a faster overseas popularity thanks to the internet.

American movies in general are low on script, symbolism, and controversial material compared to europe.

i'm unsure if you meant to say american horror are shallow or are not shallow

The Exorcist, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Night of the Living Dead, Dressed to Kill, The Fly, The Thing, Prince of Darkness, The Changeling, are all intelligent American films, there are many more. Not my fault if you only enjoy the baseline toilet humor efforts of the genre :starefreak:

I said there were exceptions but the VAST majority of american horror are thoughtless fun romps. I'm not saying that is a bad thing I'm a big fan of popcorn movies.

Don't you dare get uppity with me you pompous toilet-humor hater...just because you have a very narrow minded view on what is "good" doesnt mean you can put me down.

I know you are just arguing with me for the sake of argument because I know you are a big euro horror buff and fully understand the difference between euro horro and american horror and that the difference has been there for many many years...not just recently.

    Great thread w00den!!!

I must say, right now, Euro horror is kicking our ass, but over the last few years (even though it has been through remakes) American horror is forming its own grittier style, much like the grittiness of Euro films like High Tension, that give the over all film more of an Under Ground touch/terror with josteled camera work, more realistic blood, and in most cases, a lot more gore than we have seen (spec to Euro. America is still lacking in that category.) All in all, both societies have their perks, but Euro is far more favorable imo to American at this point

Agreed. Lately when a new "horror" movie has come out I haven't been interested. They're all so toned down. They really don't make them like they used to make them. That's why I'm going backwards and rediscovering and discovering older films. I love Eurohorror and I always have. I do not like when they remake them into slick WB teen flicks. I just stick with the originals myself.

I dunno, Inside and Haute Tension were really good. Frontier(s) was pretty bad. Dead Snow was alright but nothing new, I felt the same way for Let the Right One In.

It's hard for me to feel the same way for this new wave of European cinema that I did for the Asian cinema boom back in 99'-01'. So much of it seems like basic genre cinema with a decent amount of gore, but I see that in America's horror scene now. I'll watch them all no doubt, but so far nothing has really left me blown away.
