Seagal & Van Damme to star in WEAPON

Apparently since Steven Seagal and Jean-Claude Van Damme have been snubbed from Stallone's upcoming action epic The Expendables, the two are going to star on a dif. film together for the first time called Weapon. Here's a snippet from the press release:

This film will unite two of the world’s biggest names in action and thrillers, Steve Seagal and Jean-Claude Van Damme, who have never appeared in a film together—until now. Moshe Diamont will also produce the film which is written by Aaron Rahsaan Thomas (Numb3rs; Friday Night Lights).

In WEAPON, JACK CONWAY (Steven Seagal) and DEREK CHASE (Jean Claude Van Damme) are the two best assassins in the world—but unknown to each other. While Conway is a master sharpshooter, Chase is equally skilled with a knife. These two rival assassins form an uneasy alliance to take down the head of a drug cartel, which is backed by the DEA.

The producers announced today that principal photography on WEAPON will commence in July 2009 on locations in and around New Mexico and Vancouver. They expect to confirm a director in the next several weeks.

The film will be moderately budgeted, but I'm not expecting much with Seagal's track record. I wouldn't be surprised that if it did go to theaters that it'd be a very limited release before hitting the DVD market.

Which is why I would argue he shouldn't be snubbed from "The Expendables." It's understandable though why Stallone wouldn't include Seagal who seems at this point too overweight to play a credible part in action movie (although he does try...)

Yes, Van Damme has proven that hes got acting chops as well as fighting skills. He has even kept fit unlike his upcoming co-star, Seagal. F'n Stallone

I don't know if this is true or not, but I did hear that Stallone offered JCVD a role in The Expendables, but JCVD had to decline for either pay reasons or scheduling conflict.

Well, I just read this on IMDB for the Expendables page:

"Jean-Claude Van Damme was originally offered the role that went to Dolph Lundgren. Van Damme's reason for turning down the role was that he thought that there was no substance in his character."

So looks like it's F'n Van Damme then. I guess he wanted more of a lead role than just one of the crew. Hope he has enough substance when he co-stars with Seagal

JCVD is in no position to turn down a role like that.

The only 'substance' he should be concerned with is the one that comes from south of the border and how to keep it out of his nose.

If he had accepted the role then it would've definitely put him in the mainstream spotlight again and probably would've opened him up for more Hollywood films as opposed to the straight-to-DVD crap he has been dishing out
