I'm glad this topic came up. I'm torn about Craven.

The one big problem I have with Craven is that almost everything he is involved with has rape in it. I'm really not big on exploitation horror. Rape should have a place in the movies and media, it is important for society to be aware of these terrible things, but it doesn't belong in horror, per say. When I see chicks or children getting raped in a movie, I start to get depressed, and not enjoy the film, which is the reason I wanted to watch it in the first place.

See, some directors have realt talent and vision, but Craven just tries to shock and disturb to the extreme. Exploitation horror is a really cheap way to scare people, it requires no talent; it neglects the existential subtleties that horror SHOULD cover. Its just cheap horror. Wes really has nothing to his name that is original or good.

    Scream 1 - okay
    Scream 2, 3 -- getting old
    Red Eye - TERRIBLE
    Last HOuse original - okay
    hills have eyes - okay
people under the stairs - okay

Im sure I'm missing some. Most of his movies aren't terrible.

NOW REMEMBER, Craven only directed Nightmare on Elm Street 1 AND New Nightmare.

With that in mind, (and I LOVE freddy), a lot of the Nightmare credit has to go to other people; especially Englund.

    Wes Craven? meh

I believe Wes Craven deserves all the credit for ANOES.

    1. He came up with the idea of Freddy based off a kid dieing in his sleep.
    2. He picked the look of Freddy from a derelict that scared him as a kid.
    3. He picked the name Freddy Krueger from a childhood bully
    4. He cast Robert Englund

the reason that movie is a classic in our genre is because of Wes Craven.

1 - By no means an original idea
    2 - Agreed
3 - Circumstantial; had freddy's character failed, the name would have too.
4 - You got it right here, man; Englund is awesome and probably has more to with with Freddy's character than Craven ever did.

Also, I agree that ANOES1 is a classic; probably more credit should go to Englund though, rather than Craven, ESPECIALLY after viewing some of Craven's other work.

Actually it was a very original idea for the time.

Also I don't think you know how much work the director does for the movie. Robert Englund was just there for the shoot, Craven worked on the film way after Englund was done shooting. You have to give credit where credit was due and while Englund does create a great character, it would have never came to be without Wes Craven.

I love Freddy. I love Wes's early works, but after Scream everything went to hell, including some of the Freddy sequels, once he does a classical first film he makes a shitty sequel...like he doesn't even want to try and make it as good as the first, the sequels that would be bad should be expected by a shitty director, not the original one, but that's Wes...

I sort of like him, not great, but not bad either.

I always "liked" WC. Not all his films are solid, but the ones that are have become classics: A Nightmare on Elm Street and The Hills Have Eyes for example.
He's an important part of the horror genre...of that there is no doubt.

Here's an article that has just recently come out on Wes Craven that I agree with:

    http://www.killerfilm.com/homepage/r...-epidemic-5497

What has happened to Wes Craven? The man gave us one very seminal classic of horror; Nightmare on Elm Street, and with a few solid pieces like Last House on the Left, Hills Have Eyes, Scream, Serpent and the Rainbow, New Nightmare, any one balking at his cred is vastly mistaken. Not too many directors, especially in this genre, have that many solid films under one’s belt. I’m sure there is even a few that dig People Under the Stairs, The Shocker, and Scream 2.

Do you notice something about the majority of those films I just mentioned? They’re all up for remakes.

Tinsel town is just in this craze. There is perhaps nothing we can do about it, other than turn our backs on them, which might be a good move on paper, but a disastrous movement if we do. There isn’t a horror director left that hasn’t had a film remade. John Carpenter has three, George Romero has at least four, so of course, and this cycle would hit Wes Craven, probably a candidate for the Horror’s big Three in the 1970’s and 1980’s. There’s nothing really wrong with that, except for when the person who’s films are being remade, is actively a part of it.

I’m sure, outside of Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane, every director wishes he could go back a tweak this or change that for the better, but at that time, with the money and technology, the best they could do was what the finish product became. Craven is not only allowing remakes of his films to happen, but is active in the production side of things. I think this is good…sort of. Why not take some interest in this and help out the filmmaker to give them the best shot at making a solid film. Case in point: Hills Have Eyes.

I don’t mind that, but what has caused grief with me is the fact that he is doing this multiple times. Has the recession hit him so hard that he is so willing to take a studio’s paycheck to remake his filmography? I hope not. Craven was one of our most innovative horror directors. His Freddy Kruger is one of our beloved villains, one I’m sure my grandchildren will be scared of.

Let’s take a look at what’s being circulated for remaking: The Shocker, where he claims technology will improve the film he wasn’t that pleased with in the first place, People Under the Stairs, the proposed Scream 4 is looking more like a series reboot, don’t forget about Nightmare on Elm Street, Platinum Dunes stars filming in one month, and today’s Last House on the Left joins Hills Have Eyes, and Hills Have Eyes 2 as already been remade. It doesn’t stop there. He was an executive producer for a Carnival of Souls remake in 1998 and he was recent heard talking about furthering the Dracula 2000 series in a reboot fashion. His only new idea is this 25/8 film. He is even talking about a Hills Have Eyes 3, that I won’t call original even though he never has done one from his original series.

The merits of these remakes will be reviewed when they come out. But I’m sure at first many of you at the beginning of this article thought, “so what if he wants to do a few, and make a few bucks. It’s smart.” After reading the last paragraph, do you still agree with me? The man directed 29 films, some of those are TV and other segments like his short in Paris, Je T’aime, but four have been remade so far, with many more in the works.

Why does this bothers me? He is a “Master of Horror”. His films are inventive, original, scary, and he’s done it multiple times. While a remake doesn’t erase the past film, it seems at this rate like he is trying to erase the past. I know Cursed was a disaster, Wes, so was Scream 3 and Vampire in Brooklyn. Red Eye was not a bad film, so you’re telling me you’re given up on us? I know the ending has been kind to our favorite horror directors’ careers. But Romero and Argento are making a come back with decent pictures, and sure, Hooper is gone and Carpenter is lazy, but buck the trend, sir.

Horror is in a desperate time for originality. We all know that, and while not all remakes are a bad thing, it hurts me to see one of the greats sell out.

One day, Wes Craven will remake Wes Craven, maybe sometime shortly after Music of the Heart is remade

I like the older films of Wes Craven then the newer ones. Once he got to Scream 2, I thought he started to go downhill.

My take on the Craven flicks

Red Eye (2005) - Great thriller, love Cillian in this
Scream 3 (2000) - ugh tired of these movies
Scream 2 (1997) - watchable but brings absolutly nothing new to the table
Scream (1996/I) - decent and jump started the slasher of the 90s...unfortunetly
Vampire in Brooklyn (1995) - terrible
New Nightmare (1994) - awesome, my fav NoES besides the first
The People Under the Stairs (1991) - love this movie, some very interesting shots
Shocker (1989) - very cheesy but a fun watch none the less
The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988) - great movie excellent acting and one of the best Craven has done IMO
Deadly Friend (1986) - cheesy fun with a rediculous concept
The Hills Have Eyes Part II (1985) - so terrible...so so terrible...a fucking dog flashback...come on
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) - phenominal horror, genuinly scary, original concept
Swamp Thing (1982) - swamp thing rocks...if you were born in the 80s and don't like this movie you are a douche
The Hills Have Eyes (1977) - decent but over rated, my fav part of the movie was the dog getting revenge
The Last House on the Left (1972) - very disturbing, launched the "rape/revenge" flicks into the mainstream

    Bottom line:
Craven is not the most talented director, however he is very capable of making a solid film. He jumps genres and styles a lot but many times it does not turn out well. He has singlehandedly revolutionized the horror genre and sprung subgenres multiple times. I have lots of respect for the guy but on directing talent alone I've never been too impressed

Craven Is a little overrated but I think he can still deliver sometimes (Ex. Scream)
I like him better than Tobe Hooper whom I believe is very overrated

dude this film was boring as shit and my list of bad films ranges between hundreds of films.
This film was uninteresting to the max, the only thing that kind of saved it was Bill Pullman who was the shit in Brain Dead.
And I might have an Odd taste for movies, but there must be some one else in here that thinks this film sucks ass and isn't worth all the hype it's give.
i'd rather piss out a cactus then watch this film again.
