    Turtle power! New TMNT film!

    http://www.variety.com/article/VR111...goryid=13&cs=1

HOLLYWOOD -- The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are making their way back to the bigscreen.

The Mirage Group, which owns the property, is moving forward with a live-action film focusing on the origins of the iconic crime fighters. Project, targeted for release in 2011, would mark the fifth bigscreen outing for the sewer-dwelling heroes Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael as well as their master Splinter.

News coincides with the Turtles' 25th anniversary celebration, which kicks off Thursday in New York as the first "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" film unspools at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Legendary Pictures former chief marketing officer Scott Mednick is producing the new pic alongside Galen Walker, who produced the 2007 computer-animated "TMNT" pic, the most recent installment in the franchise. Peter Laird, Gary Richardson, Frederick Fierst, Eric Crown and Napoleon Smith III are exec producing the film, which is based on the characters created by Laird and Kevin Eastman.

The characters first appeared in a May 1984 comicbook before spawning a lucrative line of toys, cartoons and three films released in the early 1990s. In 2003, the Turtles were reintroduced to a new generation via a TV series, the "TMNT" film and a revamped merchandising program.

The latest project is being financed by Lightbox Prods.

"The original dozen comics created by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman are some of the best source material one could hope for," said Mednick, whose exec producing credits include the upcoming "Where the Wild Things Are." Laird, who bought out Eastman's share of the property several years ago, said the film will remain true to the spirit of the original comicbooks. He added that the pic may employ face replacement technology, which would allow the turtles to be much more expressive.

Today's 25th anniversary "Shell-ebration" will also include lighting the Empire State Building in "turtle green.
Live action? Origins? Based off the original comics?

I like the fact that they're going back to live action. I absolutely despised the CGI shitfest.

I heard it was very violent in the comics...but they had to totally take the badassness of that away and they turn them into crime-fighting slashing-air pansy ninja turtles who can barely do any damaging fights...

...seriously, I don't hate the turtles I love'em...but fuck, can't they just make it the way it was before and not a kiddy shit muck...

Oh yeah. They were some bad dudes, er, turtles back then. But someone thought, "Talking animals? Let's make that a kiddie show so we can sell toys!"

    And don't fret, if this

    can go to this,

there's always a chance the Turtles could go back to the violent heroes in a half shell they once were.

Turtles were my life between 1988 and 1994. I've watched the show and movies with my 7 year old nephew. None of it holds up, not even for nostalgia.

I've seen some of those ealry "dark" comics, they were tongue and cheek parodies.

If a serious/grim Ninja Turtle movie was made it would be laughed out of theaters.

ok one turtle thing does hold up:

I sort of agree with this.

I was a huge fan of them back in the day.

I just feel like it passed itself by. It was absolutely huge while it lasted but people moved on, it became another fad in itself.

I did not mind the 2007 movie for continuity purposes to the old movies but its clear to me that the well has dried for this franchise.

I think the hardcore fans of the franchise are hoping some sort of Dark Knight type treatment spliced with the comics will bring out the best in what is a franchise that the masses don't care about anymore.

I've always thought if they could have blended the movies with the cartoon and maybe took some more of the enemies in the cartoon and made them more serious and put them into a movie. That would have been probably the best they could offer that would please the fans of the comics and the fans of the original cartoon.

Raph is the one with a broken head, or it's just too heavy for the performer inside.

I grew up on the cartoon of course. And as a kid I loved the live action movies, but as an adult their annoying as hell. The turtles need to have their own seperate personalities, like they did in the CGI cartoon. Not all act like Michaelangelo like they did in the live action flick. They did raph pretty good but thats it. I loved how the CGI cartoon was a bit darker. They do need to "dark knight" this up a bit. But not to much, I mean they are giant turtles. They wanna go back to the old comics thats great. Just don't have them with the same red sash on their head. Thats the only thing I hated about the old comics. Couldn't tell them apart sometimes.
