So since pretty much every specific thread on an individual console turns into a console war, I figure why shouldn't the battle have its own thread as to not cluster the other ones and distract from otherwise meaningful conversations.
My thoughts:
I've been a gamer for as long as I can remember and console wars arent anything new, but this current crop brings more media attention and venom than others in the past. I own all 3 of them in question I'll give you my opinions on em.
Wii: The current sales leader of all 3 and also the weakest power wise. Unfortunately the Wii has been flooded with shit games and a great wii game is something like 1/50. I grew tired of the motion controls after the charm wore off I saw a lacking system that couldnt handle the powerhouse games of the other 2 and whenever a game is ported to the Wii that is on other systems (the guitar hero games for instance) they use a PS2 version, which IMO is idiotic since the Wii has roughly twice the power of the PS2. While the VC is charming, paying for old games without physical copies seems a lame idea...but may be the wave of the future, I admit to buying quite a few VC games and playing through even less.
360: The oldest of the current gen and in a solid 2nd place in terms of sales. The system has arguably the best online features with xboxlive, netflix, and full windows media center streaming capabilities. This is my main game console. The system has a shit DVD player and shouldnt be used as such. The netflix and WMC streaming are incredible assets and I use the WMC a number of times a week. I have the Elite model with the 120gig HD, plenty of room for my tons of downloads and DLC I've added to the system (I like to buy rockband songs ). Graphics-wise the 360 never ceases to amaze me, while it shouldnt perform as well as the PS3 (in terms of hardware specs) in many games side by side comparisons the graphics are BETTER on the 360. This is normally attributed to the 360 being easier to program for than the PS3, this I know nothing about, just what I've read. Ripping games to the Hard drive is also an awesome feature, now the DVD drive doesnt need to spool up, games load faster, and there's much less background noise from the system than even the wii. Also, I may be the only guy left that watches HD DVDs but when the HD is $3 and the bluray is $30...there is no choice for me. I use my HDDVD drive every now and then but less since I got a HDDVD/Bluray player in my movie room.
PS3: The 3rd place system is having a better year in 09 and sony hopes to catch up to the 360, with the death of HDDVD in 08 sony was all but assured to stomp the competition with its built in bluray player...but it hasnt. Some blame the pricing, others poor advertising, and others weaker software selection than the 360. Personally I think it was the price that is holding back sales. Another $50 price drop and the PS3 would be better off. The PS3 has the BEST bluray player for the $ IMO. I love it and it also plays DVDs magnificently, 100x better than the 360. I've owned 2 upconverting DVD players and the PS3 is without a doubt the best I've seen in terms of video and audio quality. That said I own few games for the system as whenever a game comes out on both systems I normally get the 360 version as MOST games are developed on the 360 and PORTED to the PS3. The porting process can introduce glitches, bugs, and otherwise random stuff.
So have at it
