George A. Romero the king of all zombie movies?

This has been on my mind for a while: Is George A. Romero really the king of zombie movies?

I never believe that any director is the best and don't believe in putting them on a pedestal because no director is the best ever, I believe in respecting them for them releasing movies that can be either successful/failures among the public, but at least they can learn from their faults for improvements.

There are good zombie movies out there instead of Romeros and talented directors who know the zombie genre, but I don't think they are the best (neither is Romero), but hell do they deserve the respect for what they've created. I think it's disrespectful that Romero is believed as the main man in making a great zombie film towards the fans he has and fans of the genre, but there are others who are skilled in making zombie movies, but seem to be looked down upon for not being as popular as Romero towards the genre.

Do you think he is the king of zombie films?

    Yes, I do.

Night of the Living Dead & Dawn of the Dead are masterpieces. Set the standard for zombie movies to follow.

Day was another great z movie...too bad budget cuts restricted us from seeing Romero's original vision on the big screen.

Land was OK and I thought Diary was good.

He created a couple really great zombie films, but I also agree that there are other talented directors out there that developed some good zombie efforts. In the end I still consider Romero the "king of zombie movies" by the sheer fact that he started the craze.

I only enjoy Night, Dawn, and Day. Never seen Land of the Dead though, but don't enjoy Diary at all. Will see his new one Survival of the Dead, but it feels weird that when you bring up his name to people, the Dead series will always be mentioned. Wish his other movies that aren't zombie films got more recognition. Some do, but they are rarely brought up to people.

He iz for the sole fact nobody else has made 3 zombie films that were as good. Most of the other films that are close to or equal with his best are all done by different directors. ROTLD is my 2nd favrite zombie movie behind the original Dawn of the Dead. Day of the Dead is good and Night is a lil to old for my taste but I can appreciate it to some extent. The Night 90' remake was great though :thumbup3:

Sadly, Romero is now a hack, and only makes piss poor films that leave the majority of his audience disappointed. It is safe to say his rare flashes of brilliance are now gone.

Absolutely! Romero is king of the Zombie films. As the others have said he has created several great zombie films not to mention being the pioneer into the genre. That's not to say that day won't come where he will either abdicate or be usurped, but even then he will be remembered with awe. Dawn is my favorite followed closely by Night.

Father and/or King of the genre, yes. Sort of comes with:

    A. Making a popular film that brought the genre into the spotlight.

    B. Make several films that are not only good, but are standards all other zombie flicks are compared to.

I love all his zombie movies and I do think he is the king of the zombie franchise. Night, Dawn and Day are extremely good movies. Land of the Dead was...alright, but he came back and made a damn good Diary of the Dead. I'm hoping Land of the Dead was his only zombie downfall.

I don't know if "king" is the right title; more like the "godfather" of zombie movies like misfit said. Although to be perfectly honest, I didn't like 'Night" very much, nor "Diary". "Land" was okay, but I LOVE "Dawn" and "Day"; those are epic. So, I'm not a huge fan, but I do respect the hell outta the guy due to inventing and laying out the groundwork countless more horror movies to come.

He started the cycle, he made three really solid flicks. Night of the Living Dead is one of the best films out there, but no, he's not the king of all zombie films. A king would continue making good zombie films after the three first.

At some point I might have agreed on the 'godfather' aspect, but when you compare the original Dead Trilogy to something like, let's say, the Zombie Bloodbath Trilogy. It just doesn't hold up as well.

So he just needs to be accepted for what he is, a guy who made a couple of "ok" zombie movies. Nothing more.

Romero was a pioneer in the zombie frontier and nobody can ever take that away from him IMO.

Nevertheless, his work has diluted over time just like Carpenter IMO.

I think most of it just simply comes down to eras of film making. You could take Romero 68 or Romero 78 or Romero 85 and put him in todays era of film making and still get a movie like Land of the Dead or Diary of the Dead if that makes any sense.

I don't know if its pressure from studio heads big or low budget today compared to those days or what it is but I do believe eras have a lot in play.

It's already been said but he did design what considered the staple of the zombie genre. He has been copied over and over and will be or years to come. his 2 latest ventures Land and diarie may not be his best work but they're still pretty good. It's not just the zombies however, its the political statements and his play with the evils of humanity that make him great.
    Romero is the zombie king.
