    The Problem with Werewolves

I have always wondered why or what it is that is so hard to get right with werewolf movies. The monster itself is f'n sweet and my favorite of the classical ones! But for whatever reason it seems to be near impossible to make a good one. I'm not sure if it's because the FX are to complicated or hard pull off, or if it's merely a scripting/story issue. I suppose it might be the FX as it can't be that hard to punch up a likable script and inject some good characters into it. Well it shouldn't be anyways

There are tons of werewolf movies out there but VERY few are any good. Especially when compared with other sub-genres such as Slashers, Vampires, and Zombies. All have a wider array of solid films. Although zombies seem to be the 2nd hardest to get right. Anyways I was wondering what exactly you guys think the big problem is when it comes to getting a lychan flick right. I mean there has to be a feasible reason, because there is alot more good flicks in every other genre by comparison.

I truthfully think its the fact that werewolves, compared to vampires, aren't as popular. The good ones stand out, but the bad ones are just bad. Out of curiosity which ones do you consider good. I mean for me a quick list would be:

    AWIL
    The Howling
    Dog Soilders

    Thats a good list

I like AWIL the least on there but it's ok. I guess my list would be:
    The Howling
    Dog Soldiers
    Silver Bullet
    AWIL

and even though it's not it's own film, the werewolf story in Waxwork.

Maybe because there is just so much makeup for it. Hell in the howling they had to have guys go into suites with stilts on. Film makers get lazy and just use CGI a lot of the times. It's true that there are very few good werewolf movies, but maybe that's because werewolves aren't the "in" thing.

Vampires are the most popular, they will always be king in the horror genre in my opinion. Currently, zombies are the "in" thing. Notice how many zombie movies are coming out/will be out, books, comics, hell there is even a few bands who call themselves zombiecore as their genre. Once werewolves get popular again, we'll see some more movies that are done correctly. Maybe the new Wolfman movie will be good, but more than likely not. But, it could launch a new series of good werewolf inspired movies.

The key ingredient to any good werewolf movie, in my opinion, is the transformation from human to lycan.

I'm wondering the same thing steelba. CGI can completely ruin a werewolf movie, but if a movie has a really good script, effects shouldn't be able to ruin it if you ask me. I'll get more into it when I get back home later tonight.

Underworld was great too, the first one at least. Don't remember the other two too much.

One of my favorites right there. I think it's one of few werewolf movies that actually manages to be creepy/scary.

I think you might have it right there but who know
The FX are a big part but for whatever reason they still can't pull em off regardless of advances in technology.

I actually like An American Werewolf in Paris alot *ducks*. I thought the CGI werewolves themselves sucked but the cast and story was entertaining and I enjoyed it in the theater when I saw it years back. All of the buddies were pretty believable and less stereotypical then what we got in say the new F13th remake.

    I think its marketing.

Maybe it was always that way but especially with the way the industry is today. Almost any Werewolf movie like most Vampire movies these days is subject to teen idol type casting and that from the get go ruins it for everyone on top of that the story more than likely revolving around some sort of romance to sell the teen audience.

Vampire movies lately have been riddled with that. Moreover their is nothing sexy or slick about a Werewolf in its full form whereas they keep vamps human looking to sell the affect.

    If that makes any sense.

Paris wasn't that bad at all. And as far as shitty CGI werewolves go, Paris certainly didn't have the worst.

I get what you're saying but I don't see why tey can't make a good hardcore horror film with a frightening monster. Every horror movie doesn't have to be aimed at kds and slapped with a PG-13 rating, we adults like horror flicks too..

I wish they would make a dark werewolf movie that was actually terrifying. Dog Soldiers really wasn't that scary, The Howling was far from scary, American Werewolf in London did a good job with some small jumps, but with his zombie friend it was a comedy at times.

100% agree with him, it is infact a dark romantic comedy, with some horrific elements.
