McFarlane is writing the script for the new Spawn movie

    http://movies.ign.com/articles/101/1017528p1.html

He is going to make a stand-alone film of Spawn now. Departed style kinda. I wonder how it is going to end up.

Like the Creature from the Black Lagoon remake and the sequel to Dark Crystal, this has been rumored for years. I'll believe it when they officially announce princaple production.

Agreed. The 1st movie was terrible. That's probably why they're doing it as a 'stand-alone'. Spawn is an awsome character and suffers from the same horrific movie creating as did Ghost Rider (another crappy movie with an awsome character).

Mcfarlane may walk away with the project as there are script problems and people aren't all agreeing with what the movie should be, but a dark ugly film for two hours doesn't sound like something I would pay to see in a theater, maybe see it at home at some point. The comic can be a mix of a lot of things at times

I have some experience with a producer or director saying they loved one of my scripts, signing on produce or direct it, and then immediately demanding changes. It's a very common practice, and is to be expected when you mix art with commerce. The producer thinks that because it's their money, they know what's better for the script. That is very rarely actually true. More often than not, producers like that end up with project after project either lingering in development hell, or going into turnaround. In my case, it was actually the director who wrecked the project. The producers loved my script, bought it, signed a Cannes Award-winning director who also said he loved the script, then promptly set about demanding changes to the point where, SEVEN FULL REWRITES LATER, it was an entirely different movie with only a couple character names in common with my original script. I wish I'd stood my ground and refused his nonsensical demands, but it was my very first sale and I didn't want to instantly be labeled a problem to work with.

So in my mind, McFarlane's right to walk away. It's his script. He spent ten years on it. It involves a hugely popular character he created, and obviously knows better than anyone else. He has every right to dictate how his intellectual property is handled. Not to mention that he has much more to lose than any producer or director who sign on. The blame game for a failed movie is like a reverse totem pole; shit rolls uphill. The first person to get the blame is the the writer (yes, that's right: the writer, without whom there wouldn't even be a movie to shoot in the first place, is considered the low man on the totem pole). If the writer somehow manages to avoid the blame, it gets passed up a wrung to the crew. Then the cast. Then the director.

    But never the producer.

There's an old adage in Hollywood that the producer is always right, even when they're wrong. It's basically because they're the money people, so no one is actually willing to blame them for fear of limiting their chance of getting some other project financed. So the producer won't lose much, if anything at all (even if the movie turns out to be a flop, the producers will have recouped most if not all of that 10 mil budget through pre-sales, foreign sales, etc, before the movie's even released). But McFarlane will get full blame and it'll be another 20 years before anyone even dreams of doing another Spawn movie.

So yeah. Take your script and walk, Todd. There are hundreds of producers in Hollywood, and it only takes one of them willing to back your vision for this movie to get made. Of course there's the possibility that his script, despite all the time he spent on it, is actually garbage, and that the changes being asked for will actually benefit it. Even so, it's McFarlane's call to make.
