Do you happen to know what film (if there is one) caused the ghost movie explosion in Japan? (curious)

Like the way Halloween caused the slasher craze here.

I'm assuming it was The Ring/Ringu. I'm sure there were other long-haired female ghost movies that were made before and around the same time as that. But that style of ghosts and movies seemed to really take off after it came out.

Ghost flicks have always been around, but it wasn't until Ringu appeared that it became a worldwide phenomenon.

I was thinking that as well. Was wondering if there was something before it, sort of like the way slasher purists say Black Christmas was shamelessly ripped of by JC when he made Halloween.

I've always been a fan of the original version of The Eye. The only good thing about the remake is that it had Jessica Alba in it and that she was blind, meaning that, theoretically I'm in with a chance. Other than that it was basically the same storyline, same scenes but with all the suspense and creepy atmosphere removed.
